Best 550 Paracord — Real vs Fake Showdown

Author: Jackson “Jax” Thorne | The Survival Strategist

If 550 paracord is your survival rope, here’s the truth: half the “550” cord sold on Amazon is fake. Real Mil-Spec C-5040H paracord has 7-9 inner strands (each a 3-ply twisted yarn), nylon sheath, and breaks at 550 lbs. The cheap stuff has 4-6 strands and breaks at 250-400 lbs.

How to Spot Fake 550

  • Cut a 6” piece, count inner strands: 7-9 = real, 4 = fake.
  • Pull a strand apart: 3-ply twist = real, single strand = fake.
  • Burn test: real nylon melts to a hard bead. Polyester crumbles to ash.
  • Label says “Mil-C-5040H” = real. Just “550 paracord” = maybe.
