Best Gun Cases (2026): 8 Hard, Soft and Pistol Cases, Ranked

A good gun case is cheap insurance on a rifle and scope that cost ten times as much. One hard knock in a truck bed can shift your zero, and one wet ride can start rust on a blued barrel. The right case protects against both, locks for travel and still fits behind the seat.
We ranked eight of the gun cases people search for most right now, from a $20 padded sleeve to a $390 waterproof hard case: rifle cases (hard and soft), a double rifle case and two pistol cases. Every price below is a real, in-stock, ship-to-home listing at Sportsman's Warehouse checked on October 5, 2026, and every dimension comes from the maker's own spec page. This is a research guide, not a hands-on test.

How we chose
Nobody at OSS America packed a rifle into these cases for this guide. We started from what people are actually searching: Google's related searches for "gun case" over the last 30 days are led by "rifle gun case," "best gun case," "hard gun case," "long gun case," "pistol gun case," "Pelican gun case" and "soft gun case." Then we looked for well-known cases from Pelican, Plano, SKB, Savior Equipment and Allen that Sportsman's Warehouse had in stock and would ship to your door on October 5, 2026, and skipped anything sold in-store only.
For each case we pulled the interior dimensions, weight, seal and latch details and warranty from the maker's own spec page, and the price and star rating from Sportsman's. Interior length is the number that matters most, because a case that's an inch too short is useless, so we built our chart around it.
All eight at a glance
| # | Case | Type | Interior length | Holds | Weight | Price | $ per inch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Pelican V730 | Hard rifle | 44 in | 1 rifle | 22.07 lb with foam | $209.99 | $4.77 |
| #2 | Plano AW2 42 in | Hard rifle | 43 in | 1 rifle or shotgun | not published | $129.99 | $3.02 |
| #3 | SKB iSeries 5014-6 | Hard rifle | 50.5 in | 1 long rifle | 18.73 lb | $389.99 | $7.72 |
| #4 | Pelican V800 | Hard double rifle | 53 in | 2 scoped rifles | 24.95 lb with foam | $229.99 | $4.34 |
| #5 | Savior Urban Warfare 42 in | Soft double rifle | 41 in | 2 rifles + 2 pistols | not published | $119.99 | $2.93 |
| #6 | Allen Durango 46 in | Soft rifle | fits 46 in rifle | 1 scoped rifle | 1 lb | $19.99 | $0.43 |
| #7 | Pelican V100 | Hard pistol | 11 in | 1 handgun | 3.47 lb with foam | $49.99 | $4.54 |
| #8 | Plano SE pistol | Hard pistol | 13 in | 1 scoped pistol or 2 pistols | not published | $14.99 | $1.15 |
Prices from Sportsman's Warehouse product pages on October 5, 2026; every case was in stock online with ship-to-home that day. Interior lengths and weights from the makers (Pelican, Plano, SKB, Savior Equipment); Allen Durango and the Plano SE pistol interior from the Sportsman's listing. $ per inch = price divided by interior length.
How to read the chart: soft cases are by far the cheapest way to cover a rifle, at well under $3 an inch, but they don't stop a crushing blow and can't be checked on a plane. Among hard rifle cases, the Plano All Weather 2 gives you a sealed case for about $3 an inch, and the Pelican V800 is cheaper per inch than the shorter V730 because you pay only about $20 more for 9 extra inches. The SKB costs the most per inch because you're paying for a submersible seal and a lifetime warranty, not just length.

Pelican Vault V730 Tactical Rifle Case
Best hard rifle case overall

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $210 · Interior length: 44 in · Sportsman's rating: 4.8 stars (19 reviews)
If you want one hard case for a scoped hunting rifle or an AR and you don't want to think about it again, the Pelican V730 is the one we'd point most people to. Pelican's own page lists a 44-inch interior that's 16 inches wide and 6.25 inches deep, which is enough for many scoped bolt-action hunting rifles and most carbines with an optic mounted. Measure yours first. The case closes with six push-button latches, and Sportsman's lists four stainless steel lock hasps for padlocks.
Pelican calls the Vault series crushproof, dustproof and weather-resistant, and makes it in the USA. That last word matters: weather-resistant is not the same as waterproof, and Pelican doesn't call the Vault line waterproof. What you get is a stiff polymer shell, four layers of foam (Sportsman's listing says five; Pelican's own page says four), wheels and a 3-year limited warranty, for about half the price of the sealed SKB below.
Weight is the trade-off: Pelican lists 22.07 lb with foam, before the rifle goes in. Sportsman's had it in stock online for about $210 on October 5, with ship-to-home and free shipping, and showed 4.8 stars from 19 reviews.
| Interior (Pelican) | 44 x 16 x 6.25 in |
| Exterior | 47.12 x 19.18 x 6.9 in |
| Weight | 22.07 lb with foam (Pelican) |
| Latches | 6 push-button, 4 lock hasps |
| Seal | Weather-resistant, not waterproof-rated |
| Warranty | 3-year limited |
| Made in | USA |
Pros
- + Fits most scoped hunting rifles and carbines
- + Six latches and four lock points
- + Wheels and heavy-duty handles
- + Under $210 for a name-brand hard case
Cons
- − Heavy at about 22 lb empty
- − Weather-resistant, not submersible
- − 44 inches is too short for long-barrel magnums and many shotguns
Plano All Weather 2 42-Inch Long Gun Case
Best value hard rifle case

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $130 · Interior length: 43 in · Sportsman's rating: 4.9 stars (36 reviews)
The Plano All Weather 2 is the case to buy if you need real weather protection for less money than the Pelican. Plano lists a continuous Dri-Loc seal that it calls watertight and dust-proof, a pressure release valve for air travel, dual-stage lockable latches, wheels and pluck-to-fit foam, all on a case made in the USA. Sportsman's had the 42-inch version for about $130 on October 5.
Plano's spec line gives an interior of 43 x 14 x 5 inches, an inch shorter and two inches narrower than the V730, and 1.25 inches shallower. That slimmer shape makes the case easier to fit behind a truck seat, but it's worth measuring a tall scope or a rifle with a bipod mounted before you order. On Plano's own site, one reviewer wrote that a Weatherby 307 Alpine CT was a tight fit. Plano doesn't publish a weight for this case.
Owners rate it highly: Sportsman's showed 4.9 stars from 36 reviews, and Plano's site showed 5.0 from 7. Plano covers it with a 1-year warranty, which is the shortest warranty among the hard cases here. If you hunt in rain and snow or need to fly with a rifle on a budget, this is the sweet spot.
| Interior (Plano) | 43 x 14 x 5 in |
| Exterior | 44.4 x 16.8 x 6.4 in |
| Seal | Dri-Loc gasket, watertight and dust-proof (Plano) |
| Extras | Pressure release valve, wheels, pluck foam |
| Warranty | 1-year (Plano) |
| Made in | USA |
Pros
- + Gasket seal and pressure valve for about $130
- + Lockable dual-stage latches
- + Slimmer than most hard cases
- + Strong owner ratings at Sportsman's
Cons
- − Only 5 inches deep inside: check tall optics
- − No published weight
- − 1-year warranty
SKB iSeries 5014-6 Rifle Case
Best waterproof case for long rifles

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $390 · Interior length: 50.5 in
The SKB iSeries 5014-6 is the case for people who fly with a rifle, hunt from boats or simply want the toughest protection available here. SKB makes it from injection-molded polypropylene copolymer with a gasket seal and calls it water- and dust-tight and submersible, tested to MIL-STD 810H. It also has an automatic pressure equalization valve, SKB's Trigger Latch system, padlock loops and built-in wheels.
It's the longest single-rifle case in this guide. SKB lists a 50.5-inch interior that's 14.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep, so a 24- or 26-inch-barreled long-range rifle or magnum fits where it won't in a 44-inch case. SKB lists the layered-foam version at 18.73 lb, a little lighter than the shorter Pelican V730, and backs its hardshell cases with a lifetime warranty for the original owner.
The catch is price. Sportsman's had it for about $390 on October 5 (SKB's own store listed the same layered-foam model at $404.99), which makes it the most expensive case here per inch of interior. Sportsman's showed no reviews for this listing yet. If you don't need a sealed case, the Pelican V800 gives you more length for less money.
| Interior (SKB) | 50.5 x 14.5 x 6 in |
| Exterior | 53 x 17 x 6.75 in |
| Weight | 18.73 lb (SKB) |
| Seal | Gasketed, submersible per MIL-STD 810H (SKB) |
| Temperature range | -69 F to 180 F (SKB) |
| Warranty | Lifetime, original owner |
| Made in | USA |
Pros
- + Waterproof, submersible, pressure valve
- + Fits long barrels: 50.5 in inside
- + Lifetime warranty
- + Lighter than the shorter Pelican V730 on paper
Cons
- − Most expensive case here
- − No reviews yet on the Sportsman's listing
- − Single-rifle layout at this length
Pelican Vault V800 Double Rifle Case
Best double rifle case

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $230 · Interior length: 53 in · Sportsman's rating: 4.8 stars (53 reviews)
If you carry two rifles, or a rifle and a shotgun, the Pelican V800 is the obvious step up from the V730. It uses the same Vault construction (six push-button latches, crushproof polymer, four layers of foam, made in the USA), but Pelican lists a 53-inch interior that's 16 inches wide and 6 inches deep, and says it's built to "carry two scoped rifles."
That length also makes it the case to look at for a single long-barrel rifle or most hunting shotguns. Pelican lists it at 24.95 lb with foam, so it's heavy, but the wheels do most of the work. Like the V730, it's weather-resistant rather than waterproof-rated.
Sportsman's had it for about $230 on October 5, only about $20 more than the single V730, and it carries the most reviews of any case here: 4.8 stars from 53 reviews.
| Interior (Pelican) | 53 x 16 x 6 in |
| Exterior | 56.11 x 19.15 x 6.65 in |
| Weight | 24.95 lb with foam (Pelican) |
| Capacity | 2 scoped rifles (Pelican) |
| Latches | 6 push-button |
| Made in | USA |
Pros
- + Room for two scoped rifles or one long one
- + Only about $20 more than the V730
- + Most-reviewed case here, 4.8 stars
- + Wheels and six latches
Cons
- − About 25 lb before the guns go in
- − 56 inches long outside: won't fit some trunks
- − Weather-resistant, not submersible
Savior Equipment Urban Warfare 42-Inch Double Rifle Case
Best soft case for two rifles

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $120 · Interior length: 41 in
Not every trip needs a 20-pound hard case. For the range or the walk to the stand, a padded soft case is lighter and quicker. The Savior Equipment Urban Warfare is one of the best-known double-rifle bags, and the second-generation version Sportsman's sells has padded double rifle slots with hook-and-loop lockdown straps, a full-length padded divider, two padded pistol sleeves, mesh pockets and a bag that lays completely flat when opened.
Savior lists the 42-inch bag at 42 x 12.75 x 7 inches outside, with two main compartments of 41 x 12 x 3.5 inches each, plus a secondary compartment, two outer pockets and MOLLE webbing. It's made of 600D polyester, the zippers are lockable, and you can wear it as a backpack with the removable straps. Savior also makes 36- to 55-inch sizes.
Sportsman's had the Obsidian Black 42-inch bag in stock for about $120 on October 5 (Savior's own store showed that exact color and size unavailable the same day). Keep in mind that a soft case doesn't meet TSA's rule for flying with a firearm, which requires a locked hard-sided container.
| Exterior (Savior) | 42 x 12.75 x 7 in |
| Main compartments | 2, each 41 x 12 x 3.5 in |
| Extra storage | 2 pistol sleeves, secondary compartment, 2 outer pockets |
| Material | 600D polyester, MOLLE webbing |
| Carry | Handles, shoulder strap, removable backpack straps |
| Other sizes | 36, 46, 51, 55 in |
Pros
- + Holds two rifles plus two pistols
- + Backpack straps for hands-free carry
- + Lays flat as a shooting mat
- + Lots of pocket space for mags and ear pro
Cons
- − Soft case: no crush protection, not for airline travel
- − No published weight
- − No reviews yet on the Sportsman's listing
Allen Durango 46-Inch Scoped Rifle Case
Best budget soft rifle case

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $20 · Interior length: fits a 46 in scoped rifle · Sportsman's rating: 4.6 stars (18 reviews)
A soft case doesn't have to cost much to do its main job, which is keeping a rifle and scope from getting scratched and knocked around in a truck. The Allen Durango is about as basic and as cheap as a decent case gets: a tough Endura outer shell, 7/8-inch foam padding and a length that fits a 46-inch scoped rifle, according to the Sportsman's listing.
Sportsman's lists it at 1 lb, which is roughly one-twentieth the weight of the hard rifle cases here, and had it in stock for about $20 on October 5 (4.6 stars from 18 reviews). One thing to know: it ships in assorted earth-tone colors and you can't choose which one you get. It has no pockets, no lock and no crush protection: think scratch-and-ding cover, not travel case.
| Fits | 46 in scoped rifle (Sportsman's) |
| Length | 48 in (Sportsman's) |
| Weight | 1 lb (Sportsman's) |
| Material | Endura exterior, 7/8 in foam |
| Color | Assorted, no choice |
| Model | Allen 269-46 |
Pros
- + About $20
- + Weighs about 1 lb
- + Padded for scopes
- + Easy to store
Cons
- − Color is random
- − No pockets or lockable zipper
- − No crush or water protection
Pelican Vault V100 Small Pistol Case
Best hard pistol case

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $50 · Interior length: 11 in · Sportsman's rating: 5 stars (16 reviews)
The Pelican V100 is the Vault series shrunk down for one handgun. Pelican lists an interior of 11 x 8 x 4.5 inches, which fits most full-size and compact pistols with room for a spare magazine in the foam, plus two push-button latches and, per Sportsman's, two stainless steel lock hasps. Pelican lists it at 3.47 lb with foam and makes it in the USA.
It has the same crushproof, dustproof, weather-resistant claims as the bigger Vault cases, and because it's a locked, hard-sided container, it's the kind of case TSA describes for checking a handgun (see the FAQ below). Sportsman's had it in stock for about $50 on October 5, with a perfect 5.0-star rating from 16 reviews. Long-slides and compensated pistols may need a bigger case, so measure first.
| Interior (Pelican) | 11 x 8 x 4.5 in |
| Exterior | 12.28 x 12.03 x 5.16 in |
| Weight | 3.47 lb with foam (Pelican) |
| Latches | 2 push-button, 2 lock hasps |
| Made in | USA |
Pros
- + Pelican build for about $50
- + Lockable hard case for one handgun
- + 5.0 stars from 16 Sportsman's reviews
- + Made in the USA
Cons
- − Fits one pistol, not two
- − Weather-resistant, not waterproof
- − Tight for long-slides and comped guns
Plano SE Series Scoped Pistol Case
Best budget pistol case

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $15 · Interior length: 13 in · Sportsman's rating: 4.8 stars (32 reviews)
For a range bag, a closet shelf or the glovebox-to-range run, a $15 hard case does the job. The Plano SE Series Scoped Pistol Case is a ribbed polymer box with contoured recessed latches, padlock tabs, steel hinge pins and interlocking high-density foam, made in the USA. Plano lists it at 13.5 x 10.13 x 3 inches outside, and the Sportsman's listing gives an interior of 13 x 9.5 x 2.5 inches.
That longer interior is the reason to pick it over other cheap pistol boxes: Sportsman's says it fits a longer-barrel pistol with a scope, or two pistols. Sportsman's had it for about $15 on October 5 with 4.8 stars from 32 reviews. The photo on the listing shows an older blue-gray color; Sportsman's lists the current case as black.
| Exterior (Plano) | 13.5 x 10.13 x 3 in |
| Interior | 13 x 9.5 x 2.5 in (Sportsman's) |
| Fits | 1 scoped pistol or 2 pistols (Sportsman's) |
| Features | Recessed latches, padlock tabs, steel hinge pins |
| Warranty | 1-year (Plano) |
| Made in | USA |
Pros
- + About $15
- + Fits a scoped or long-barrel pistol
- + Padlock tabs
- + 4.8 stars from 32 reviews
Cons
- − Only 2.5 inches deep inside
- − Light-duty latches compared with Pelican
- − No seal against water or dust
Which should you buy?
- One scoped hunting rifle or AR, mostly by truck: Pelican V730.
- You want a sealed, airline-ready case on a budget: Plano All Weather 2 42-inch.
- A long barrel, a magnum, or boat and plane trips: SKB iSeries 5014-6.
- Two rifles, or a rifle and a shotgun: Pelican V800.
- Range days with two rifles and pistols: Savior Urban Warfare 42-inch.
- The cheapest way to protect a scope in the truck: Allen Durango 46-inch.
- One handgun, locked and hard-sided: Pelican V100, or the Plano SE if you just need a $15 box.
What to look for in a gun case
- Interior length first. Measure your gun from muzzle to the back of the stock, with the scope, bipod or light mounted. Add at least an inch. Makers list interior dimensions; retailers often list the exterior, which is 2 to 3 inches longer.
- Interior depth for scopes. A large scope on high rings, or a mounted bipod, eats depth fast. The Plano AW2 is 5 inches deep inside; the Pelican V730 is 6.25.
- Seal vs. weather resistance. A gasket seal and pressure valve (Plano All Weather 2, SKB iSeries) keep out water and help in airplane holds. Pelican's Vault line is crushproof and weather-resistant, but it doesn't make waterproof claims.
- Hard or soft. Hard cases protect against crushing and are required for flying. Soft cases are lighter, cheaper and quicker for the range or the walk to the stand. Many hunters own one of each.
- Lock points. For travel you'll want padlock holes or hasps. TSA says easily opened locked cases aren't permitted, so use solid locks.
- Weight and wheels. The long hard cases here weigh about 19 to 25 lb empty, per the makers. Wheels make a big difference in an airport or a long parking lot.
- Moisture. Foam can trap moisture against metal, so dry and oil a wet gun before it goes back in any case. Our 25 hunting essentials and fall hunting prep guides cover the rest of the kit.
Flying with a gun
TSA's rule is short: unloaded firearms go only in checked baggage, in a locked hard-sided container that completely secures the gun, and you declare it to the airline at the ticket counter. Ammunition must be in a box made for ammo and can ride in the same locked case. Airlines and states add their own rules, so check both before you go. A soft case never meets the airline requirement on its own.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best gun case for a rifle?
For most scoped hunting rifles and ARs, the Pelican V730 (about $210 at Sportsman's on October 5, 2026): a 44-inch interior, six latches, four lock points and a 3-year warranty. If your rifle has a long barrel, step up to the 53-inch Pelican V800 or the 50.5-inch SKB iSeries 5014-6.
Hard or soft gun case: which is better?
Hard cases protect against crushing and impacts and are the only kind TSA accepts for checked firearms. Soft cases weigh far less (the Allen Durango is listed at 1 lb, against 18 to 25 lb for the long hard cases here) and are fine for truck rides, the range and the walk to the stand. Many hunters keep a hard case for travel and a soft case for everyday use.
What size gun case do I need?
Measure the gun from muzzle to buttpad with the optic on and add at least an inch. Then compare that to the maker's interior length, not the exterior. For reference: Pelican V730 is 44 inches inside, Plano All Weather 2 42-inch is 43, SKB iSeries 5014-6 is 50.5, and Pelican V800 is 53.
Is a Pelican Vault case waterproof?
Pelican describes the Vault series as crushproof, dustproof and weather-resistant, not waterproof. If you need a gasket seal and pressure valve, look at the Plano All Weather 2 or the SKB iSeries, both of which the makers describe as watertight.
Can I fly with a gun in these cases?
TSA allows unloaded firearms in checked baggage only, in a locked hard-sided container, declared at the ticket counter. Any of the hard cases here can meet that when locked properly. The soft Savior and Allen cases can't. Always check your airline's rules and the laws where you're landing.
Can I keep ammo in my gun case?
TSA says ammunition can be transported in the same locked hard-sided case as the firearm if it's packed in a box made to carry ammunition. Loose rounds or loaded magazines that don't fully enclose the ammo aren't allowed.
Does Sportsman's Warehouse ship gun cases to your home?
Yes. Every case in this guide showed ship-to-home on its Sportsman's Warehouse page on October 5, 2026. The larger cases were eligible for free shipping; the Allen Durango, Pelican V100 and Plano SE showed free shipping on orders of $75 or more.
The bottom line
Buy the Pelican V730 if you want one tough, lockable case for a scoped rifle. Buy the Plano All Weather 2 if you want a sealed case for less, and the Pelican V800 if there's any chance you'll carry two guns. Add a cheap soft case for the walk to the stand, and you've covered every trip. If you're still picking the rifle or the glass, start with our best deer hunting rifles and rifle scope guides.
