How we chose

We looked at the established tactical brands (5.11, Condor, TRU-SPEC, First Tactical) and two budget brands (TACVASEN and MAGCOMSEN), and picked each brand's softshell that best fits everyday carry, range days and cold-weather outdoor work. For each we pulled the maker's fabric, weather rating, pocket list and carry features, the price at the store we link, and owner ratings where the store shows them.
