How we chose
Warmth in a down jacket comes from two numbers: fill power (how much a given weight of down lofts; higher is better) and fill weight (how much down there is). Many brands publish only the first. We favored makers that publish both, and we say clearly when a number isn't published. We pulled men's size medium specs where makers list sizes, used the price at the store we link, and noted owner ratings where the store shows them. What each gram of down costs
Read the chart with fill power in mind. The Pioneer Camp gives you the most grams per dollar, but it's 700-fill duck down. The Eos looks expensive per gram because 900+ fill lofts more per gram than anything else here. The three Rab jackets land within two cents of each other, so pick among them by how warm you need to be.

The Microlight Alpine is the jacket we'd tell most people to buy: warm enough for a cold camp, light enough to live in your pack all year. Rab puts 152 grams of 700-fill recycled down, treated with a Grangers hydrophobic finish, into body-mapped baffles, then wraps it in 30D Pertex Quantum with a fluorocarbon-free DWR. The whole hoody weighs 428 grams (15.1 ounces) in a men's medium.
The numbers back it up. At $2.14 per gram of down it's within two cents of Rab's Pro jackets, the best value among the premium picks, and 36% of its total weight is insulation. The hood has a wired peak you can shape against wind, and the cuffs and drawcord hem seal in heat. Rab calls it a bestseller; the owner ratings on the page didn't load for us, so we can't quote them.

The secret is 900+ fill goose down, the highest fill power in this guide. Higher fill power lofts more per gram, so 112.5 grams of it goes further than the same weight of 700 fill.
That's also why it looks expensive on our chart at $3.81 per gram: you're paying for quality of down, not quantity. It has zippered hand and chest pockets, a dual-drawcord hood, a 12d x 20d Pertex Quantum shell with PFAS-free DWR, and packs to about 3 liters. If ounces matter, this is the one.

Patagonia fills it with 800-fill Responsible Down Standard down, wraps it in NetPlus 100% postconsumer recycled nylon ripstop made from old fishing nets, and says it weighs 369 grams (13 ounces). 568 owners on Patagonia's site average 4.4/5.
Two things to know. Patagonia doesn't publish fill weight, so it's not on our chart. And this version has no hood; Patagonia sells a separate Down Sweater Hoody. What you do get is Patagonia's Ironclad Guarantee behind it.

It's the lightest jacket in this guide at 243 grams (8.6 ounces), it has a hood, it uses 800-fill EX down, and it costs $250.00. Montbell cuts the shell from 10-denier Ballistic Airlight nylon ripstop with a water-repellent finish, and it packs down to about 2.4 liters with the included stuff sack.
The trade-offs are honest ones. A 10-denier shell is thin, so treat it gently around brush and campfires. And Montbell doesn't list fill weight, so we can't tell you exactly how much down you get.

If you want real down warmth for well under $200, Pioneer Camp's hooded puffer is the value play. The listing specifies 700 fill power, 90% duck down and 220 grams of fill, the highest fill weight in this guide. At $0.64 per gram of down, it's by far the cheapest insulation on our chart.
The catches: it's duck down at 90%, not goose, and Pioneer Camp doesn't publish the total weight, so expect a heavier, bulkier jacket than the technical picks above. It's a winter coat for camp, the truck and the stand, not an ultralight layer. 133 Amazon reviewers rate it 4.4/5.

What does fill power mean?
Fill power measures how much space an ounce of down fills, in cubic inches. Higher fill power down traps more air per ounce, so a 900-fill jacket can match a 700-fill jacket's warmth with less down and less weight. In this guide fill power runs from 700 (Rab Microlight, Pioneer Camp) to 900+ (Feathered Friends Eos).
Is fill weight more important than fill power?
Both matter. Fill power tells you the quality of the down; fill weight tells you the quantity. A jacket with lots of 700-fill down can be warmer than one with a little 900-fill down. That's why we list both and flag jackets whose makers don't publish fill weight.
Can down jackets get wet?
Down loses much of its insulation when soaked. Hydrophobic treatments, like the Grangers finish Rab uses, and DWR shells help it shrug off light moisture, but no jacket here is a rain jacket. In real rain, wear a shell over it.
Goose down vs duck down: does it matter?
What matters most is fill power and fill weight, not the bird. Goose down is more common at the highest fill powers, which is why the 800-900+ fill jackets here use goose and the budget Pioneer Camp uses 90% duck down at 700 fill.
Do I need a hood?
For camp, hunting and cold summits, a hood adds a lot of warmth for little weight. Six of the seven jackets here have one; the Patagonia Down Sweater is the exception, and Patagonia sells a hooded version separately.
How should I store a down jacket?
