Best Duck Hunting Shotguns (2026): 8 Picks From $530 to Premium

A duck gun lives a hard life: rain, mud, salt, sub-freezing mornings and heavy steel loads, often all in the same week. The best one is the shotgun that keeps cycling when it's caked in marsh muck, fits you with a heavy coat on, and doesn't punish your shoulder by the third flight of the morning.

We compared the 12-gauge duck guns hunters search for most as the season opens and ranked eight: three inertia-driven semi-autos, three gas guns and two pumps, from about $530 to about $1,950. Every price below is a real new, in-stock listing on Guns.com checked on October 5, 2026, and every spec comes from the maker (Beretta's site wasn't reachable for us, so its specs come from the Guns.com listing). This is a research guide, not a hands-on test.

The short answer

For most duck hunters, the Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 is the one to beat; the Franchi Affinity 3.5 is the value play. Our picks:

Prices are the lowest new listings on Guns.com on October 5, 2026, before tax, shipping and your dealer's transfer fee. Every link opens a Guns.com search already filtered to 12 gauge and a 28-inch barrel, cheapest first.

How we chose

Nobody at OSS America shot these shotguns for this guide. We started with what hunters are searching right now: "duck hunting shotgun" is one of the top related searches for "duck hunting" in the U.S. over the last 30 days, alongside "waders," as the season opens. Then we looked at which proven waterfowl guns Guns.com had new and in stock on October 5, 2026, and pulled specs and MSRPs from Benelli, Franchi, Winchester, Mossberg and Stoeger.

We priced every gun as a 12 gauge with a 28-inch barrel, the most common duck setup, so you're comparing like with like. We weighed action type (inertia, gas or pump), chamber length (3 or 3½ inches), weight, capacity, weather resistance and fit adjustments, and price. Two guns dropped out: every new Remington 870 Fieldmaster and Beretta A300 Outlander in that search was out of stock, and most new Browning Maxus II listings showed their price only in the cart.

Guns.com prices are the lowest new, in-stock listing we found for each model with a 28-inch 12-gauge barrel on October 5, 2026. Guns.com is a marketplace and prices change daily. The SBE 3 price is the 3-inch model (3½-inch from $2,099 that day); the SX4 price and weight are for the 3-inch version. MSRPs are the makers' base (black synthetic or listed) prices; camo usually costs more. Beretta's site wasn't reachable for us, so no A400 MSRP is shown.

What you pay vs. what you carry: lowest new Guns.com price on October 5, 2026 and maker-listed weight, cheapest first. Save it or pin it.

How to read the chart: prices spread out almost four to one, but weights only range from 6.9 to 8 lb. The pumps and the Stoeger cost the least and weigh the most. The Benelli SBE 3 costs the most among inertia guns and weighs the least, while the Beretta A400 costs about the same and is nearly a pound heavier, by design, for softer recoil. The middle of the chart, the SX4, Affinity 3.5 and 940 Pro all within about $50 of each other, is where most duck hunters will get the best value.

Inertia vs. gas vs. pump, in one minute

Inertia (Benelli, Franchi, Stoeger): the gun's recoil cycles the action. Very clean-running and simple, but lighter inertia guns can feel snappier with heavy loads. Gas (Winchester, Beretta, Mossberg 940): gas from the fired shell cycles the action, which spreads recoil out and usually feels softer, but the system needs more cleaning. Pump (Benelli SuperNova, Mossberg 835): you cycle it, so it runs any load and costs less, at the price of slower follow-up shots.

#1

Benelli Super Black Eagle 3

Best duck shotgun overall

Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun
Benelli Super Black Eagle 3. Photo: Guns.com listing (black synthetic version).

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $1,900 · MSRP: $2,149 (3-inch) / $2,399 (3½-inch) · Weight: 6.9 to 7 lb

If you want the shotgun that a lot of serious waterfowlers measure everything else against, this is it. The Super Black Eagle 3 runs on Benelli's Inertia Driven system, which uses the gun's recoil rather than gas to cycle. Benelli's pitch is simple: no gas ports to foul, nothing to adjust, and it handles everything from light field loads to 3½-inch magnums. That cleanliness is a real advantage in a muddy blind or a salt marsh.

Benelli built the SBE 3 around waterfowl hunters: an oversized bolt handle and safety for gloved hands, the Comfort Tech 3 stock with chevron recoil absorbers, a Combtech cheek pad, and Crio cryogenically treated barrels and chokes (three standard, two extended). Benelli lists the 3-inch 28-inch model (#10317) at 6.9 lb with 3+1 capacity, and the 3½-inch version (#10316) at 7 lb. Benelli's own page quotes Ron Spomer of Ducks Unlimited and Robert Williams of Petersen's Hunting praising it in brutal conditions, which tells you who it's built for, even if those are the maker's chosen quotes.

On October 5, 2026, the lowest new 28-inch SBE 3 on Guns.com was $1,899.00: the 3-inch black synthetic model, $250 under Benelli's MSRP. If you want 3½-inch capability, the same search showed those from about $2,100 (marked down from $2,399). Camo versions cost more.

Pros

  • + Clean-running inertia system with nothing to adjust
  • + Lightest gun in this guide
  • + Controls sized for gloves
  • + Big discount off MSRP on Guns.com that day

Cons

  • − Expensive
  • − Light inertia guns can feel snappier with heavy loads than gas guns
  • − Only 3+1 capacity; the cheapest listing is the 3-inch model

Franchi Affinity 3.5

Best value semi-auto (inertia)

Franchi Affinity 3.5 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun
Franchi Affinity 3.5. Photo: Franchi (Realtree Max-7 version shown).

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $1,000 · MSRP: $1,229 black / $1,329 camo · Weight: 7 lb

The Affinity 3.5 gives you the same basic idea as the SBE 3, an inertia-driven semi-auto that handles 3½-inch shells, for about half the money. Franchi lists the 28-inch black synthetic model (#42201) at 7 lb with a 4+1 magazine, IC/M/F chokes, an orange bar front sight, a drilled-and-tapped receiver and an adjustable drop at heel so you can fine-tune how the stock fits your face.

That extra round over the Benelli and the adjustable stock make it a strong value. It weighs about the same as the SBE 3, so expect a similar feel in recoil with heavy loads.

Franchi's MSRP is $1,229 in black and $1,329 in Realtree Max-7 or Mossy Oak Bottomland. On October 5, 2026, Guns.com had a new 28-inch Affinity 3.5 from about $1,000, well under MSRP.

Pros

  • + Inertia system and 3½-inch chamber at about half SBE 3 money
  • + 4+1 capacity
  • + Adjustable drop at heel
  • + Drilled and tapped for an optic

Cons

  • − Fewer premium touches than the SBE 3
  • − Recoil with 3½-inch loads is stout in a 7 lb inertia gun
  • − Camo versions cost $100 more

Winchester SX4 Waterfowl Hunter

Best value gas semi-auto

Winchester SX4 Waterfowl Hunter 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun
Winchester SX4 Waterfowl Hunter. Photo: Guns.com listing (Realtree Max-7).

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $990 · MSRP: $1,169.99 (3-inch) / $1,249.99 (3½-inch) · Weight: 7 lb

If you'd rather have a gas gun, which many shooters find softer with heavy loads, the SX4 Waterfowl Hunter is the value pick. Winchester's Active Valve gas system self-adjusts for different loads, and Winchester says it's built to stay reliable in extreme weather and temperatures while managing felt recoil. The receiver is aluminum alloy, the chamber and bore get a Black Nitride treatment against corrosion, and the bolt handle, release and safety are oversized.

The Waterfowl Hunter comes in full camo with three Invector-Plus chokes (F, M, IC), a TRUGLO fiber-optic sight, an Inflex recoil pad and a 4-round magazine. Winchester lists the 3-inch 28-inch 12 gauge at 7 lb 0 oz and the 3½-inch version at 7 lb 2 oz.

On October 5, 2026, Guns.com had a new 28-inch SX4 Waterfowl Hunter in Realtree Max-7 from about $990, marked down from $1,169.99, which matches Winchester's MSRP for the 3-inch model. That made it the cheapest gas-operated semi-auto in this guide.

Pros

  • + Cheapest gas semi-auto here
  • + Self-adjusting gas system
  • + Corrosion-resistant chamber and bore
  • + Full camo, fiber-optic sight and recoil pad included

Cons

  • − Gas guns need more cleaning than inertia guns
  • − Aluminum receiver is less rugged-feeling than steel to some shooters
  • − The lowest price was for the 3-inch version

Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus

Best soft-shooting premium gas gun

Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun
Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus. Photo: Guns.com listing (camo version).

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $1,950 · Weight: 7.8 lb (per listing) · rebate offer shown on listing

The A400 Xtreme Plus is Beretta's top waterfowl semi-auto and the main rival to the SBE 3. Where the Benelli uses inertia, the Beretta uses its B-Link gas system with a rotating bolt, and the Guns.com listing says it cycles everything from the lightest target loads to heavy 3½-inch hunting loads. It adds Beretta's Kick-Off Mega hydraulic recoil reducer in the stock and Steelium Plus barrels, which the listing says further reduce felt recoil, plus a stepped rib and enlarged controls for bad weather.

It's also heavier than the SBE 3: the Guns.com listing shows 7.8 lb for a 28-inch gun. More weight plus gas operation plus a hydraulic recoil system is a recipe for a softer-shooting gun, which is why many hunters who shoot a lot of heavy steel and tungsten loads prefer this style.

On October 5, 2026, the lowest new 28-inch A400 Xtreme Plus on Guns.com was $1,949.00, and the listing advertised up to $300 back on any new A400 Xtreme Plus. Rebate terms change, so read them on the listing. That listing showed "2 rounds," which likely reflects how it ships; check capacity on the listing you pick. We couldn't load Beretta's own spec page that day, so we don't quote an MSRP.

  • + Enlarged controls for cold, wet hands
  • + Rebate offer on the listing that day

Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl

Best for optics and custom fit

Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun
Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl. Photo: Mossberg (#85164).

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $1,040 · MSRP: $1,141 to $1,281 · Weight: 7.75 lb

The 940 Pro Waterfowl is Mossberg's gas semi-auto built for the blind, and it has two features nobody else here matches. It's optic-ready from the factory, with receiver cuts for Shield RMSc-pattern micro red dots plus adapter plates for RMR, Docter and Leupold footprints. And the stock adjusts for length of pull (13 to 14.25 inches), drop and cast, so you can fit it to your body and your layering.

Mossberg also focused on corrosion: a boron-nitride coated gas piston, magazine tube, hammer and sear, a chrome-lined chamber and bore, a stainless return spring and a self-draining stock. The #85164 version has a 28-inch vent-rib barrel in Patriot Brown Cerakote, an X-Factor extended choke, a HIVIZ fiber-optic sight, 4+1 capacity, a 3-inch chamber and a listed weight of 7.75 lb.

Mossberg's price for #85164 is $1,281 (another 940 Pro Waterfowl, #85186, is $1,141). On October 5, 2026, Guns.com had new 28-inch 940 Pro Waterfowls from about $1,040. Note the 3-inch chamber: if you want to shoot 3½-inch shells, pick a different gun.

Stoeger M3500

Best budget semi-auto

Stoeger M3500 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun
Stoeger M3500. Photo: Guns.com listing (black synthetic).

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $630 · MSRP: $849 black / $949 camo · Weight: 7.8 lb

The Stoeger M3500 is the way into an inertia-driven 3½-inch semi-auto for pump-gun money. Stoeger lists the 28-inch black synthetic model (#36024) with IC, M and F chokes plus an XFT extended turkey/waterfowl choke, a 4+1 magazine, a red-bar front sight, a drilled-and-tapped receiver and a weight of 7.8 lb.

It's heavier than the Franchi and Benelli inertia guns, which isn't all bad: more weight soaks up some recoil from big magnum loads. You give up refinement and fancier finishes, but you get the same basic operating idea at a fraction of the price.

Stoeger's MSRP is $849 in black and $949 in camo, and it has just added a $999 M3500 Waterfowl Special in Mossy Oak Bottomland with Cerakote metal. On October 5, 2026, Guns.com had new 28-inch M3500s from about $630, the lowest price of any semi-auto in this guide.

Benelli SuperNova

Best pump-action duck gun

Benelli SuperNova 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun
Benelli SuperNova. Photo: Guns.com listing (black synthetic).

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $650 · MSRP: $749 black / $849 Max-7 · Weight: 8 lb

Pumps still make a lot of sense in a duck blind: they cycle whatever you feed them, they're simple to clean, and they cost less. Benelli's SuperNova is a modern pump with a 3½-inch chamber, a ComforTech recoil-reducing stock, IC/M/F chokes, a red-bar front sight and a 4+1 magazine. Benelli lists the 28-inch black synthetic model (#20100) at 8 lb, the heaviest gun here, which helps with recoil from magnum loads.

It's a sensible first serious duck gun for a new hunter, or a backup that lives in the boat.

Benelli's MSRP is $749 in black and $849 in Realtree Max-7. On October 5, 2026, Guns.com had new 28-inch SuperNovas from about $650; the Max-7 version was out of stock in that search.

Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Waterfowl

Lowest price

Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Waterfowl 12 gauge duck hunting shotgun

Guns.com, new (12 ga, 28 in): from about $530 · MSRP: $661 · Weight: 7.75 lb

The 835 Ulti-Mag is Mossberg's 3½-inch pump, and the Waterfowl version (#63521) comes dressed for the marsh in Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Blades with a 28-inch vent-rib barrel, Mossberg's Accu-Mag choke set and a front fiber-optic sight. Mossberg lists it at 7.75 lb with 5+1 capacity, one more shell than any other gun here, and a fixed 14-inch length of pull.

It's the cheapest way in this guide to get a full camo waterfowl gun that chambers 3½-inch shells. You give up the semi-auto's quick follow-ups and the Benelli pump's recoil-reducing stock.

Mossberg's price is $661. On October 5, 2026, Guns.com had exactly one new 28-inch 835 Ulti-Mag Waterfowl in stock, at $529.99 (that listing showed 6 rounds; Mossberg says 5+1). Another listing was out of stock, so availability may be thin.

Which should you buy?

What to look for in a duck shotgun

12 gauge, 28-inch barrel

Most duck hunters shoot a 12 gauge because it throws the most non-toxic shot. A 26- or 28-inch barrel balances swing and handling in a blind or a boat. A 20 gauge works for lighter shooters and close decoying birds, and several guns here come in 20 gauge too.

3-inch or 3½-inch chamber

A 3½-inch chamber lets you shoot the biggest magnum loads, which some hunters like for geese and long passing shots. Many duck hunters find 3-inch loads plenty and easier on the shoulder. A 3½-inch gun shoots shorter shells too, but a 3-inch gun can't shoot 3½-inch shells.

Weather resistance

Look for corrosion-resistant finishes (Cerakote, nitride, chrome-lined bores), synthetic stocks and camo or matte finishes. Rinse and dry your gun after salt water no matter what it's made of.

Fit with a heavy coat

Length of pull feels different in a T-shirt than in a waterfowl parka. Adjustable stocks (Mossberg 940, Franchi's adjustable drop) or stock spacers help you get a consistent cheek weld through the season.

Non-toxic shot and plugs

Federal law requires non-toxic shot (steel, bismuth, tungsten and similar) for waterfowl, and limits your shotgun to three shells total, so a magazine plug is required for ducks and geese. Check your state's regulations and any special conservation-order seasons. Want the rest of the gear list? See our duck hunting gear for beginners guide.

Buying a shotgun online

You buy online, and the gun ships to a licensed dealer (FFL) near you, where you pick it up after the background check. Some listings can't ship to certain states. Our Is Guns.com legit? guide covers fees and the process. If you also want a shotgun for the house, see our best home defense shotguns.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best duck hunting shotgun?

For most hunters who can afford it, the Benelli Super Black Eagle 3: a clean-running inertia semi-auto built for waterfowl, from about $1,900 new on Guns.com on October 5, 2026. The Franchi Affinity 3.5 (from about $1,000) gives you a similar inertia system for about half the price.

Is a semi-auto or pump better for duck hunting?

Semi-autos give faster follow-up shots and usually less felt recoil, which matters when a flock is working. Pumps are cheaper, simpler and cycle any load because you work the action. Many hunters start with a pump and upgrade later.

Inertia or gas: which is better for waterfowl?

Both work well. Inertia guns (Benelli, Franchi, Stoeger) stay cleaner and have fewer parts to maintain. Gas guns (Beretta, Winchester, Mossberg 940) usually feel softer with heavy loads but need more regular cleaning. Pick the one that fits you and that you'll maintain.

Do I need a 3½-inch chamber for ducks?

No. Plenty of duck hunters shoot 3-inch or even 2¾-inch loads. A 3½-inch chamber gives you the option of the heaviest magnum shells, which some hunters prefer for geese. Of the guns here, the Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl and the cheapest SBE 3 and SX4 listings are 3-inch guns.

What's the best budget duck shotgun?

On October 5, 2026, the cheapest guns in this guide on Guns.com were the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag Waterfowl pump (from about $530), the Stoeger M3500 semi-auto (from about $630) and the Benelli SuperNova pump (from about $650).

What choke should I use for ducks?

With steel shot, many hunters use improved cylinder or modified for decoying ducks and modified or an extended waterfowl choke for longer shots. Pattern your gun with the exact load you'll hunt with; steel generally patterns tighter than lead through the same choke.

Do I need a plug in my shotgun for duck hunting?

Yes. Federal migratory bird rules limit you to three shells total (one in the chamber, two in the magazine) for ducks and geese, so a plug is required. Check your state's regulations for any exceptions such as light-goose conservation seasons.

Can I buy a duck hunting shotgun online?

Yes. You buy online and the shotgun ships to a licensed dealer (FFL) you choose. You pick it up in person with ID after the background check. State and local laws and shipping restrictions still apply.

The bottom line

Buy the Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 if you want the duck gun you'll hand down. Buy the Franchi Affinity 3.5 or the Winchester SX4 Waterfowl Hunter if you want most of that performance for about half the money. And if the budget is tight, a Benelli SuperNova pump will kill ducks for decades. Whatever you buy, pattern it with your hunting load before opening day, plug it, and know your state's waterfowl regulations.
