11 Best-Selling Shotguns for Home Defense (Ranked #11 to #1)

Eleven pump-action and semi-auto shotguns that Americans are actually buying to defend their homes. Not what the gun magazines say. Not what the tactical influencer got paid to shill. The guns that show up in real safes, in real trucks, and behind real doors when the alarm goes off at 3 AM.

We sorted by real-world popularity, cross-checked against dealer stock, tested every spec sheet, and ranked them from #11 to #1. Some will surprise you. Number one won't.

Every link goes to Ammunition Depot — the fastest-shipping US firearms retailer we've partnered with. Prices vary by state and stock; click through for current pricing and legal availability in your state.

The Countdown — #11 to #1

#11
Smith & Wesson M&P12 Bullpup
SMITH & WESSON

Smith & Wesson M&P12 Bullpup

The next-gen bullpup. Smith & Wesson's answer to the KSG. Two 6-round tubes with a paddle selector, 19" barrel, ambidextrous controls, thumbhole grip. Everything the KSG got wrong on the first try, the M&P12 fixed.

Bullpup pump, 19" barrel, 7+1 capacity, dual-magazine tube selector
#10
Kel-Tec KSG Bullpup
KEL-TEC

Kel-Tec KSG Bullpup

The 14-shot bullpup. Twin magazine tubes stacked side-by-side, 7 rounds each, downward ejection so lefties don't get scalded. Eighteen-and-a-half-inch barrel in a 26.1" overall package — shorter than an AR pistol. The KSG is the shotgun that made bullpups mainstream.

Bullpup pump, 18.5" barrel, 14+1 dual-tube capacity
#9
Winchester SXP Defender
WINCHESTER

Winchester SXP Defender

The fastest pump ever built. Winchester's inertia-assisted pump cycles so fast you can outrun a semi-auto if you know what you're doing. Eighteen-inch barrel, 5+1 tube, chrome-lined bore, TRUGLO fiber-optic front sight. Under $450 and still cycles like a $2K gun.

Pump-action, 18" barrel, 5+1 capacity, fastest-cycling pump on the market
#8
Langdon Tactical Beretta 1301 Patrol
LANGDON TACTICAL

Langdon Tactical Beretta 1301 Patrol

The custom-shop 1301. Langdon takes Beretta's already-perfect 1301 Tactical and rebuilds it right — enhanced bolt release, extended charging handle, oversized safety, Aridus mount, bronze/black Cerakote. This is what the top USPSA shotgun shooters run.

Semi-auto, 18.7" barrel, 7+1 capacity, Langdon Tactical build
#7
Mossberg 590RM Tactical
MOSSBERG

Mossberg 590RM Tactical

The mag-fed 590. Mossberg's answer to every ban-state resident who wants a semi-auto-fast reload without going semi-auto. Detachable 10-round box magazine, tactical adjustable stock, 18.5" barrel. Reload in one second, keep going.

Detachable magazine, 18.5" barrel, 10+1 capacity, adjustable stock
#6
Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol
BERETTA

Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol

Semi-auto Beretta at half the M4 price. The Ultima Patrol brings the Beretta gas system to under $1,200. Nineteen-inch barrel, oversized controls, ghost-ring sights, tri-color pattern. The gun Beretta made when they realized not everyone can drop $2K on an M4.

Semi-auto, 19.1" barrel, camo/black finish
#5
Benelli Bolt-Action 12 Gauge
BENELLI

Benelli Bolt-Action 12 Gauge

The precision oddball. Yes, a bolt-action 12 gauge. Sounds crazy, until you shoot slugs at 100 yards and print 3" groups. Benelli builds it for hunters who want a rifle's precision with 12-gauge stopping power. Five plus one, brown wood, absolute unicorn.

Bolt-action 12 gauge, 18.5" barrel, 5+1 capacity, brown finish
#4
Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus
BERETTA

Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus

The apex semi-auto. Beretta's flagship gas gun. Kick-Off recoil reduction cuts felt recoil ~40%, cycles anything from light target loads to 3.5" magnums, and comes dressed in Optifade Timber for the crossover hunter. This is the gun a serious shooter buys after they've owned three others.

Semi-auto, 28" barrel, 3.5" chamber, Optifade Timber camo
#3
Mossberg 590A1 Tactical
MOSSBERG

Mossberg 590A1 Tactical

Mil-spec, no compromises. Heavy-walled 20" barrel, thicker heat shield, bayonet lug, metal trigger guard, metal safety button. This is the shotgun the US military tested to 3,000 rounds without a failure. Eight in the tube. Buy once, hand it down.

20" heavy-walled barrel, 8+1 capacity, mil-spec build
#2
Maverick 88 Security
MAVERICK

Maverick 88 Security

The under-$400 workhorse. Maverick is Mossberg's budget line — same guts, cheaper stock. Eighteen-and-a-half-inch barrel, 5+1 magazine, and an ATI ShotForce top-folding stock so it stores compact and unfolds fast. This is the shotgun you buy your brother-in-law who just bought a house.

18.5" barrel, 5+1 capacity, ATI ShotForce top-folding stock
#1
Mossberg 590 14.375" Pistol Grip
MOSSBERG

Mossberg 590 14.375" Pistol Grip

The one everyone comes back to. Cut-down 14.375" pump built for tight hallways and quick handling. Five in the tube plus one in the pipe, pistol grip so your kids can pull it out of the safe without a shoulder full of stock. Black/FDE finish looks the part. The Mossberg 590 platform is the government-issue benchmark for a reason. If you buy one shotgun this year, this is it.

14.375" barrel, 5+1 capacity, pistol grip, Black/FDE finish

How to Pick Yours

  • Pump vs. semi-auto: Pump = cheaper, mechanically simpler, will cycle any shell you feed it. Semi-auto = faster follow-up, softer recoil, costs 2-3× more. For a first shotgun, pump wins.
  • Barrel length: 18.5" is the legal minimum in most states without an NFA tax stamp. Shorter (14.375" Mossberg 590) requires you understand the pistol-grip-firearm rules — check your state.
  • Capacity: 5+1 is standard. 8+1 (590A1) or 14+1 (KSG) means you reload less. Most home-defense scenarios are over in under three shots.
  • Ammo choice: #00 buckshot or #4 buck for defense. Skip birdshot (won't stop, over-penetrates walls anyway). Skip slugs unless you have 40 yards of open backyard.
