Best Gun Cleaning Kits (2026): 7 Picks From $16 to Otis Elite

A clean gun isn't about looks. Carbon, copper and lead fouling build up in the bore and action, and that's how you end up with a stuck case, a failure to feed or a rifle that quietly stops shooting where you zeroed it. A good kit makes cleaning fast enough that you'll actually do it after every range trip and every hunt.

We compared the gun cleaning kits people are searching for most right now, from a $16 Hoppe's pistol kit to the Otis Elite, and ranked seven that were in stock on October 5, 2026 at Sportsman's Warehouse or EuroOptic. Every price is from the live listing that day and every spec from the maker or the store. This is a research guide, not a hands-on test.

The short answer

If you own several guns, the Otis Elite is the most complete kit. If you want the most for your money, get the Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Universal. Our picks:

Prices checked October 5, 2026, before tax and shipping.

How we chose

Nobody at OSS America ran these kits through a cleaning session for this guide. We started with what people are searching: "best gun cleaning kit" leads Google's related searches, followed by "9mm gun cleaning kit," "universal gun cleaning kit," "Hoppe's gun cleaning kit" and "Otis gun cleaning kit," and "shotgun cleaning kit" and "handgun cleaning kit" both broke out this month. So we covered all of those: universal kits, a shotgun kit, two handgun kits, and the Hoppe's and Otis names people ask for.

Then we checked every kit's stock and price at Sportsman's Warehouse and EuroOptic on October 5, 2026, and dropped anything out of stock, including both Hoppe's Deluxe kits, the Hoppe's Rifle and Shotgun kit and the Outers 17-piece universal kit. Where the same kit was cheaper at one store, we link the cheaper one. Specs come from Otis and Real Avid's own product pages and from the Sportsman's listings. We compared calibers covered, brush count, rod or cable, case, what's included (solvent, oil, mat) and price.

In-stock prices at EuroOptic and Sportsman's Warehouse, checked October 5, 2026, before tax and shipping. Brush counts from Otis and the Sportsman's listings; Real Avid doesn't state a count for the Gun Boss Pro Handgun.

Best gun cleaning kits 2026, price per bronze bore brush: Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Universal $4.44 (9 brushes, $39.99), Hoppe's Soft Sided Pistol $5.32 (3 brushes, $15.97), Real Avid Master Cleaning Station $7.22 (9 brushes, $64.99), Otis Tactical FG-750 $9.06 (6 brushes, $54.39), Otis Elite FG-1000 $9.37 (16 brushes, $149.89), Otis Universal Shotgun $19.00 (3 brushes, $56.99)
What you pay per bore brush: store price on October 5, 2026 divided by the bronze bore brushes in the box. Save it or pin it.

How to read the chart: brushes are the part of a kit that decides which guns it can clean, so price per brush is a quick way to compare value. The Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Universal gives you 9 brushes for under $40, and that's hard to beat. The Otis kits cost more per brush because you're also paying for Memory-Flex cables, made-in-USA parts and, with the Elite, a lot of extra tools. Treat this as a rough value check, not a quality score.

Otis Elite Universal Gun Cleaning Kit (FG-1000)

Best gun cleaning kit overall

EuroOptic: about $150 · Bore brushes: 16 · Covers: .17 cal to 12 gauge

If you own a little of everything, a .22, a deer rifle, a 9mm and a shotgun, the Otis Elite is the one kit that covers all of it. Otis says it has more than 60 components for rifles, pistols, shotguns and inline muzzleloaders from .17 caliber up through 12 gauge, and that it includes a complete Otis Tactical kit inside the bigger case.

The heart of it is Otis's Breech-to-Muzzle system. Instead of pushing a rod in from the muzzle, you feed a flexible Memory-Flex cable in from the chamber and pull patches and brushes through the bore in the same direction the bullet travels. The Elite comes with 8-, 12- and 36-inch cables, 16 bronze bore brushes with the size stamped on the stem (from .17 up to 12/10 gauge), slotted tips, patch savers, small and large obstruction removers, a .223/5.56 chamber brush, picks, scrapers, three grades of AP brushes, two half-ounce bottles of FP-10 CLP, and a lens-care set for your optics. Otis makes it in the USA.

Price is where it gets interesting. Otis's own store had it for $169.99 on October 5, 2026, and Sportsman's Warehouse listed it at $234.99 (with 4.9 of 5 stars from 61 Sportsman's reviews). EuroOptic had it in stock for $149.89, the lowest of the three, so that's where we link.

  • + Covers almost every common caliber and gauge
  • + Breech-to-muzzle cleaning with flexible cables
  • + Includes a full Tactical kit for the range bag
  • + About $85 less at EuroOptic than at Sportsman's the day we checked

Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Universal Gun Cleaning Kit

Best value universal kit

Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Universal Gun Cleaning Kit. Photo: Real Avid.

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $40 · Bore brushes: 9 · Covers: .22 to .45 cal plus 12 and 20 gauge

The Gun Boss Pro Universal is the answer to the cheap plastic-tray kit that dumps its parts on the floor the first time you open it. Real Avid puts everything in a hard, stand-up case with a kickstand, and every brush, jag and tip snaps into its own labeled slot. The Sportsman's listing calls the case "virtually indestructible."

Inside, Sportsman's lists an ergonomic T-handle, 9 phosphor bronze bore brushes, 7 bore patch jags, 2 mops, 50 patches, 2 nylon bore patch tips and 3 brass rod sections. Real Avid says the rods extend to 32 inches and every piece uses standard 8-32 threads, so you can add brushes from other brands later. It covers .22 through .45 caliber handguns and rifles plus 20 and 12 gauge shotguns.

At $39.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse on October 5 (in stock, free shipping over $75), it works out to about $4.44 per bore brush, the best value in our chart. Real Avid's own store also lists it at $39.99, but showed it as "Available Soon" that day. It's a rod kit, not a cable kit, so cleaning from the breech is easy on bolt rifles but harder on some lever and pump guns.

Real Avid Master Cleaning Station - Universal

Best for the workbench

Real Avid Master Cleaning Station - Universal gun cleaning kit
Real Avid Master Cleaning Station - Universal. Photo: Sportsman's Warehouse listing.

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $65 · Bore brushes: 9 · Mat: 43 x 16 in

The Master Cleaning Station is a full cleaning kit built into one end of a big padded mat. Roll it out on the kitchen table or the tailgate and you have a 43 by 16 inch work surface that Real Avid says is oil- and solvent-resistant with a slip-resistant back, plus a pop-up tool case holding everything you need. When you're done, the whole thing rolls up into its storage sleeve.

Sportsman's lists bore brushes for .22, .243/6.5mm, .270/.280/7mm, .30, .357/9mm, .40, .45, 20 gauge and 12 gauge, mops for 20 and 12 gauge, jags for .22 through .45, two slotted patch tips, 50 patches, a multi-function T-handle and a magnetic tray that keeps pins and springs from rolling away. That's 9 brushes, the same count as the Gun Boss Pro, plus the mat and magnetic tray for about $25 more.

It was $64.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse on October 5, in stock with free shipping over $75. Real Avid's site lists the same $64.99 but marked it "Available Soon." If you clean at home and want to protect the table and keep small parts together, this is the most useful setup here for the money.

Otis Tactical Cleaning Kit (FG-750)

Best compact kit for the range bag

Otis Tactical Cleaning Kit (FG-750). Photo: Otis Technology.

EuroOptic: about $54 · Bore brushes: 6 · Case: round soft pack

Otis calls the Tactical "the original Otis Cleaning Kit," a descendant of the shoe-polish-tin kit the company started with. It's the small, round, zippered pack you can toss in a range bag, truck console or hunting pack and forget about until you need it.

Otis lists six bronze bore brushes (.22/.223, .270, .30/.308/30-06/30-30, .38/9mm, .45 and 12 gauge), 2- and 3-inch cotton patches (10 each), three slotted tips, two patch savers, Memory-Flex cables for breech-to-muzzle cleaning, a half-ounce bottle of FP-10 CLP and a chamber flag, all made in the USA. Because each brush covers a group of calibers, those six brushes handle most common rifles, pistols and 12 gauge shotguns.

Otis sells it for $63.99 and Sportsman's had it at $69.99 on October 5, but EuroOptic had it in stock for $54.39, so that's our link. If you're tempted by the Elite, remember that the Elite already includes a full Tactical kit.

Otis Universal Shotgun Cleaning Kit

Best shotgun cleaning kit

Otis Universal Shotgun Cleaning Kit gun cleaning kit
Otis Universal Shotgun Cleaning Kit. Photo: Otis Technology.

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $57 · Bore brushes: 3 · Covers: 12/10, 20 ga and .410

"Shotgun cleaning kit" broke out in Google searches this month, and with duck and upland seasons underway that makes sense. A shotgun barrel is long and wide, and pushing a sectional rod down 28 inches of it is clumsy. Otis's Universal Shotgun kit uses a single 40-inch Memory-Flex cable you feed in from the chamber end and pull through, so the dirt comes out the muzzle.

The kit (Otis item FG-410) includes 12/10, 20 and .410 gauge bore brushes with the size marked on the stem, ten 3-inch cotton patches, a slotted tip, small and large patch savers, a large obstruction remover for mud, snow or a stuck hull, a T-handle, a chamber flag and a half-ounce bottle of FP-10 CLP, all packed in a 4 x 4 x 2.5 inch soft case that fits in a blind bag or vest pocket. Otis makes it in the USA.

It was $56.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse on October 5, in stock with free shipping over $75. Otis's own store listed it at $47.99 the same day. Three brushes for about $57 is the highest price per brush in our chart, but a shotgun only needs one brush per gauge, and the obstruction remover is the part you'll be glad you carried.

Bore brushes3 (12/10 ga, 20 ga, .410)
Cable40 in Memory-Flex with T-handle
PatchesTen 3 in cotton patches
ExtrasObstruction remover, chamber flag, FP-10 CLP
Case4 x 4 x 2.5 in soft pack
ModelFG-410, made in the USA

Pros

  • + Fits in a vest pocket or blind bag
  • + Long cable is easier than a rod in a shotgun barrel
  • + Obstruction remover for field problems
  • + Covers four gauges

Cons

  • − Highest price per brush here
  • − About $9 more at Sportsman's than Otis's own price
  • − Shotguns only

Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Handgun Cleaning Kit

Best 9mm and handgun kit

Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Handgun Cleaning Kit. Photo: Real Avid.

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $30 · Calibers: .22, 9mm, .357, .38, .40, .45

"9mm gun cleaning kit" is the second most-searched cleaning kit query right now, and most 9mm owners don't need a 60-piece rifle kit. The Gun Boss Pro Handgun is the pistol version of Real Avid's stand-up case: compact (Sportsman's lists 8.25 x 4.5 x 1.25 inches), crush-proof and spill-proof, with every tool snapped into a labeled spot.

Real Avid lists phosphor bronze brushes for .22, 9mm, .357, .38, .40 and .45, plus bore patch jags and slotted tips. The two brass rod sections thread together into a 12.5-inch rod, and they connect to a rotating receiver in the handle so the rod spins with the rifling instead of unscrewing. You can also lock a tool to a fixed point on the handle and use it like a pencil for scrubbing and picking around the slide and frame.

It was $29.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse on October 5, in stock with free shipping over $75. Real Avid doesn't say how many brushes are in the box (several calibers share one brush size, and its product photo shows four), so this kit isn't in our price-per-brush chart.

Calibers.22, 9mm, .357, .38, .40, .45

ToolsPhosphor bronze brushes, jags, slotted tips
CasePolycarbonate stand-up kickstand case
Size8.25 x 4.5 x 1.25 in
Threads8-32

Pros

  • + Right-sized for a 9mm or other pistol
  • + Rotating handle keeps rods from unscrewing
  • + Small hard case fits a range bag
  • + Under $30

Cons

  • − Handguns only
  • − No solvent or oil; patch count not listed

Hoppe's Soft Sided Pistol Cleaning Kit

Best budget pistol kit

Hoppe's Soft Sided Pistol Cleaning Kit. Photo: Sportsman's Warehouse listing.

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $16 · Bore brushes: 3 · Covers: .22, 9mm, .40

Hoppe's has been a gun-cleaning name for generations, and "Hoppe's gun cleaning kit" is one of the top cleaning-kit searches this month. The Hoppe's kits people usually mean, the Deluxe Gun Cleaning Kit and the Rifle and Shotgun kit, were out of stock at Sportsman's Warehouse on October 5. The one Hoppe's kit that was in stock and shipping is this limited-edition soft-sided pistol kit, and at $15.97 it's the cheapest kit in this guide.

Sportsman's lists a one-piece aluminum pistol rod with a swivel T-handle, three bronze brushes and three brass jags for .22, 9mm and .40 caliber, patches, and a zippered nylon Hoppe's pouch. It's a dry kit: no Hoppe's No. 9 solvent or oil in the bag, so pick up a bottle at the same time.

It covers the most common pistol calibers for about $5 per brush, and the one-piece rod means no joints to loosen. If you shoot a .45 or a .380, look at the Real Avid handgun kit instead.

Bore brushes3 bronze (.22, 9mm, .40)
Jags3 brass
RodOne-piece aluminum, swivel T-handle

Pros

  • + Cheapest kit in this guide
  • + One-piece rod: nothing to unscrew
  • + Covers .22, 9mm and .40
  • + The Hoppe's name for under $16

Cons

  • − No solvent or oil
  • − No .45, .380 or .38 brush
  • − Limited edition, so stock may not last

Which should you buy?

What to look for in a gun cleaning kit

  • The calibers you actually own. Check the brush list against your guns. A "universal" kit that skips .40 or 20 gauge isn't universal for you.
  • Rod or cable. Sectional rods (Real Avid, Hoppe's) are stiff and familiar. Flexible cables (Otis) let you clean from the chamber to the muzzle, which is handy on lever, pump and semi-auto guns where you can't get straight behind the bore.
  • Brass, bronze and coated parts. Brass rods and jags and bronze brushes are softer than barrel steel, which is why most good kits use them.
  • What's not in the box. Several kits here include no solvent or oil. Budget a bottle of bore cleaner and lube (or a CLP) and more patches.
  • A way to hold the gun. A cleaning cradle makes rifle and shotgun cleaning much easier. The Tipton Gun Cleaning Vise was $59.99 and in stock at Sportsman's Warehouse on October 5, with 4.8 of 5 stars from 11 reviews.
  • Safety first. Unload the gun, check it twice, and keep ammunition out of the room. Wear gloves and clean in a ventilated area.

Buying from EuroOptic

We link EuroOptic for the two Otis kits because it had them for less than the other stores on October 5. Frequently asked questions

What is the best gun cleaning kit?

For a household with several kinds of guns, the Otis Elite FG-1000: 16 bore brushes from .17 caliber to 12 gauge, breech-to-muzzle cables and more than 60 parts, $149.89 at EuroOptic on October 5, 2026. For the best value, the Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Universal had 9 brushes for $39.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse.

What's the best cleaning kit for a 9mm?

A handgun kit with a 9mm brush is all you need. The Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Handgun ($29.99) covers .22 through .45 including 9mm, and the Hoppe's Soft Sided Pistol Kit ($15.97) covers .22, 9mm and .40. Add a bottle of solvent and oil, since neither includes them.

Is a universal gun cleaning kit worth it?

If you own guns in several calibers, yes. One universal kit usually costs less than buying a separate kit per gun, and it keeps everything in one place. Check the brush list against your guns first.

Is Otis better than Hoppe's?

They're different approaches. Otis kits use flexible Memory-Flex cables to pull brushes and patches from the chamber to the muzzle, and Otis makes them in the USA. Hoppe's kits mostly use traditional rods and are known for their No. 9 solvent and low prices. Pick based on your guns and how you like to clean.

How often should I clean my gun?

Many shooters clean after every range trip or hunt, and always before storing a gun for a long time or after it gets wet. Defensive guns are worth cleaning and checking regularly even if they haven't been fired. Follow your gun maker's manual.

Do gun cleaning kits come with solvent?

Some do. The Otis kits here include a small bottle of FP-10 CLP. The Real Avid and Hoppe's kits here don't include solvent or oil, so buy them separately.

What's the best shotgun cleaning kit?

The Otis Universal Shotgun kit ($56.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse on October 5) covers 12/10, 20 gauge and .410 with a 40-inch cable and an obstruction remover, and it packs into a 4 x 4 inch case.

The bottom line

Buy the Otis Elite if you want one kit for every gun you own and like the idea of cleaning from the chamber out. Buy the Real Avid Gun Boss Pro Universal if you want an organized, complete kit for about $40. And if you mostly shoot one handgun or one shotgun, get the kit made for it and spend the difference on ammo and practice. Whatever you pick, add solvent, oil and extra patches, and make cleaning part of every trip to the range.
