It's the biggest tent in KingCamp's Khan line and, at $1,799.99, the most expensive. It's also the most-reviewed Khan tent on KingCamp's site, with 20 owner reviews averaging 4.9/5.

How we reviewed the Khan Palace

This is a research-based review, not a hands-on test. We haven't pitched the Palace ourselves, and we'll update this page if we do. What we did: pulled the full spec sheet, package list, FAQ and listing graphics from kingcampoutdoors.com, priced every accessory and bundle that fits it, read all 20 owner reviews on KingCamp's site (including the two four-star ones), and read KingCamp's return, shipping and warranty pages. Then we added up what each bundle would cost bought piece by piece.

The layout: three rooms under one roof

The Palace is built like a small cabin. Two thick 52mm aluminum poles hold up the roof, and each has four built-in hooks for lanterns, fans or clothes. Between them is an 8.2 x 13.1 ft living room, and on each side is a sleeping wing. The side walls rise 29.5 inches straight up before the roof starts, so cots can sit right against the canvas, and the 6.4 ft doorway means most adults walk in without ducking. KingCamp's graphic puts the floor at 269 sq ft, which works out to about $6.69 per square foot.

The walls work like the rest of the Khan line: closed for snow and wind, mesh-only for a cross breeze, or rolled up entirely to make an open-air pavilion. The front door has clear PVC windows on either side so you can see out in cold weather, there's a zippered port for running a power cord inside, and the zippers are heavy resin, which KingCamp says resists sand and dust.

How many people does it really sleep? The 10-12 rating is the maximum. KingCamp's own description is more useful: up to 8 adults comfortably, with room left for tables and cots. Its inner-tent graphic says the same thing, room for 8 to sleep comfortably with both inner tents installed. Owners on KingCamp's site describe two adults and two kids with gear and room to spare, four people sharing comfortably, and families of five and six. Plan on 8 adults, or a big family plus a real living room.

Setting up the Palace

This is not a one-person tent. KingCamp recommends at least two adults, and the kit is serious: two 52mm main poles, two awning poles, 48 steel stakes and 16 guy lines. KingCamp's FAQ says the whole thing packs into one bag of about 35.4 x 13.8 x 11 in that fits most car trunks and SUV cargo areas. Plan for the weight, though. The listing text says 83.6 lb and one of its graphics says 98.5 lb, so budget for the heavier number.

Owners give real-world times. One says about 30 to 40 minutes with one adult and one child. Another says about an hour to get the tent and the whole camp set up, and credits KingCamp's online video. Several call it easy for its size, and one says it's possible alone but much easier with two. You need a flat site at least 22 x 14 ft before guy lines, which rules out many tight campground pads. Check your site dimensions before you book.

How it handles wind and rain

The owner reviews are the best evidence here. One couple has taken it on four beach trips of 7 to 13 days at Padre Island National Seashore and says it handles the sustained 25-45 mph winds there. A Colorado fly-fishing trip reports high winds and rain with no leaks, and nights in the thirties. Others describe staying dry through heavy rain.

For balance: an owner with decades of North Sea camping points out that a tent this big has a very large sail area in wind, so every guy line matters. And one four-star review says the seams leaked in the rain. That review is from 2023; the current listing says the poly-cotton is pre-treated and the seams use swelling thread that seals needle holes when wet. Seam-check it on your first wet night either way.

Running a wood stove in the Palace

The Palace has an anti-backflow chimney vent at the peak and a zip-open section in the center of the groundsheet, so the stove sits on bare ground instead of the tent floor. KingCamp's matching stove is the Surefire Size L ($299.99), 1.0mm stainless steel with a big viewing window, a removable cooktop, six chimney sections and a silicone fireproof mat. For the Palace's taller roof, KingCamp adds an extra pipe kit ($34.99) in its stove bundle.

One real warning from the owner reviews: a four-star reviewer says the stove sleeve is not completely fire-retardant and burned where the tent leaned against the stove pipe. KingCamp sent a replacement tent, and the owner plans to add a stove-pipe boot. Take that seriously. Keep the canvas off the pipe, guy the tent tight so it can't lean in wind, consider a pipe boot, and always run a CO alarm.

The inner tents are sold separately

Out of the box, the Palace is one big open pavilion. The sleeping wings become private bedrooms with KingCamp's Inner for KHAN Palace, $279.99. Per the listing, each inner sleeps up to 4, has double doors, blocks out light for sleeping in, has a 210D Oxford floor rated 2000mm, weighs 9 lb, packs to 24 x 7 x 7 in and sets up at 193 x 77 x 83 in. The Palace takes up to two.

The listing is priced as one inner tent, so a fully walled two-bedroom Palace runs $2,359.97 bought separately. Owners like them: one says the inner goes up easily, and another says that with an inner for the kids it's dark enough to put them to bed before sunset. Two other Palace accessories were sold out when we checked: the matching groundsheet ($149.99, 650 x 410 cm, 5000mm) and the Palace Plus tarp ($269.99, a 450 x 330 cm front awning).

The Palace has the most reviews of any Khan tent on KingCamp's site: 20, averaging 4.9/5, with 18 five-star and 2 four-star ratings. They're collected by the seller, so weigh them accordingly, but they're specific:

• Space: the most common praise. Owners compare it to a small cabin.
• Wind and rain: multiple trips in strong wind and heavy rain, including the Padre Island beach camper above.
• Build quality: thick fabric, heavy poles and stakes, everything in waterproof bags. "Heavy" comes up just as often.

Who should buy the Khan Palace, and who shouldn't

Buy it if you camp with a big family, two families or a hunting or fishing crew, you stay put for several days, and you want a living room where everyone can eat, play cards and wait out the rain. It's also a strong semi-permanent backyard or property guest tent. Per sleeping spot it's $150.00 to $180.00 on KingCamp's rating, or about $225.00 for 8 adults.

Skip it if you're a family of four: the Khan Villa gives you the same no-center-pole idea for $999.99. Skip it too if you camp at tight campground pads, move camp often, or can't lift an 80-100 lb bag with a partner.
