Best 20 Gauge Shotguns (2026): 8 Picks for Upland, Ducks, Turkey and Youth

The 20 gauge is the shotgun a lot of hunters wish they'd bought first. It's lighter to carry than a 12, kicks less, and with today's shells it still handles quail, pheasant, doves, turkeys and decoying ducks.
We ranked eight 20-gauge shotguns that people are searching for right now, from a $220 Stevens pump to a $1,500 Benelli built for long upland walks: four semi-autos, three pumps and an over/under. Every price below is a real new, in-stock listing on Guns.com checked on October 12, 2026, and the specs come from the makers wherever their sites were reachable. This is a research guide, not a hands-on test.

How we chose
Nobody at OSS America shot these shotguns for this guide. We started with what people are actually searching: "best 20 gauge shotgun" is the top related search for "20 gauge shotgun" in the U.S. over the last 30 days, followed by searches for shells and for Mossberg, Remington, Winchester, Beretta and Browning, with "youth model" and "Stevens" among the fastest-rising terms. Then we checked which of those guns Guns.com had new and in stock in 20 gauge on October 12, 2026, and pulled specs from Benelli, Winchester, Mossberg and Stevens.
We weighed action type, weight, fit options for smaller or younger shooters, capacity, weather resistance and price. A few popular names didn't make it: every new 20-gauge Remington 870 field gun and every new Browning BPS in the search was out of stock, and all the new 20-gauge Browning A5 listings showed their price only in the cart. Beretta's website was behind a security check we didn't get past, so the A300 details come from its Guns.com listing.

Guns.com prices are the lowest new, in-stock 20-gauge listing we found for each model on October 12, 2026 (barrel length is that listing's). Guns.com is a marketplace and prices change daily; prices are before tax, shipping and your dealer's transfer fee. Weights are from Benelli, Winchester and Mossberg; the Beretta and both Stevens weights come from the Guns.com listings. Capacity is the maker's figure, except the Beretta (from the listing).
How to read the chart: prices spread out more than six to one, but weights only run from 5.25 to 7.5 lb, so money doesn't simply buy a lighter gun. The two adult pumps are the heaviest; the Super Bantam is light because it's a short youth gun. The Stevens 555 and the Benelli Montefeltro are the lightest full-size guns, and the 555 costs less than half as much, with two shots instead of five. In the middle, the Beretta and Winchester gas guns sit within about $30 of each other and within a few ounces.
Gas vs. inertia vs. pump vs. over/under, in one minute
Gas (Beretta A300, Winchester SX4): gas from the fired shell cycles the action, which spreads recoil out and usually feels softer, but the system needs regular cleaning. Inertia (Benelli Montefeltro): the gun's recoil cycles the action, so it runs clean and simple, but very light loads may not cycle and light inertia guns can feel snappier. Pump (Mossberg 500, Stevens 320): you cycle it, so it runs any load and costs less, with slower follow-up shots. Over/under (Stevens 555): two barrels, two chokes, two shots, and the easiest action to check as safe at a glance.
The 8 best 20 gauge shotguns, ranked
Beretta A300 Ultima 20 Gauge
Best 20 gauge overall

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 28 in): from about $900 · Listed retail: $949 · Weight: 6.76 lb (per listing)
If you want one 20 gauge that can walk the fields in October, sit a duck blind in November and chase gobblers in April, the A300 Ultima is the one we'd point most people to first: a gas-operated Beretta semi-auto at a price most hunters can reach.
The Guns.com listing highlights what changed on the Ultima version: a bigger bolt handle and bolt release for cold or gloved hands, a wider stepped rib with a mid-bead and a fiber-optic front sight, and Beretta's Kick-Off recoil reduction system in the stock. Gas operation plus a recoil reducer is a common recipe for a soft-shooting gun, which is what many 20-gauge buyers want.
On October 12, 2026, the lowest new 20-gauge A300 Ultima on Guns.com was $899.00 for the black synthetic 28-inch model (SKU J32TT28), $50 under its listed retail, and the listing advertised up to $200 back on select A300 Ultima models (read the rebate terms before you count on it). The same search showed an A300 Ultima Turkey with a 24-inch barrel for $999 and the short-barreled A300 Ultima Patrol for home defense from about $1,200. One honest note: the listing shows a capacity of 3 rounds, and one of its two Guns.com reviews reported an ejection problem. We couldn't load Beretta's own site that day, so we don't quote Beretta's spec sheet here.
| Action | Gas semi-auto |
| Barrel | 28 in, stepped rib, fiber-optic front + mid-bead |
| Recoil system | Kick-Off (per listing) |
| Capacity | 3 rounds (per listing) |
| Weight | 6.76 lb (Guns.com listing) |
| Price that day | $899.00 new (retail $949) |
Pros
- + Soft-shooting recipe: gas action plus Kick-Off recoil reducer
- + Bigger controls for cold hands
- + Turkey and home-defense versions in the same family
- + Rebate offer on the listing that day
Cons
- − Listing shows only 3-round capacity
- − Gas guns need more cleaning than inertia guns
- − We couldn't verify Beretta's own spec sheet (site blocked)
Benelli Montefeltro 20 Gauge
Best for upland birds (lightest semi-auto)

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 26 in): from about $1,500 · MSRP: $1,699 · Weight: 5.8 lb
Upland hunters carry a gun for hours and shoot it for seconds, so every ounce matters. Benelli's Montefeltro is the lightest semi-auto in this guide: Benelli lists the 20-gauge 26-inch model (#10884) at 5.8 lb, nearly a pound lighter than the Beretta. Benelli calls it a long-time favorite of upland hunters and clays shooters, and it's built on Benelli's Inertia-Driven system, which Benelli describes as clean, reliable and adjustment-free because it uses recoil, not gas, to cycle.
It wears a satin walnut stock and gloss-blued metal. Benelli's spec table lists a 3-inch chamber, 4+1 capacity, Crio-treated barrel and chokes (IC, M, F), a red-bar front sight and a 14-3/8-inch length of pull. The Guns.com listing adds a Micro Cell recoil pad and a shim kit to adjust drop and cast. A Compact (#10886) has a 24-inch barrel and 12-1/2-inch length of pull at 5.3 lb.
Two trade-offs to know. Benelli's minimum recommended load is a 2½-dram, 7/8-ounce shell, so very light target loads may not cycle an inertia gun reliably. And a light inertia gun can feel snappier with heavy loads than a heavier gas gun. On October 12, 2026, the lowest new 20-gauge Montefeltro on Guns.com was $1,499.00, $200 under Benelli's $1,699 MSRP; the Compact was the same price.
| Action | Inertia-Driven semi-auto |
| Chamber | 3 in |
| Barrel | 26 in (24 and 28 in available), Crio chokes IC/M/F |
| Capacity | 4+1 |
| Weight | 5.8 lb (26 in), 5.3 lb Compact, per Benelli |
| MSRP | $1,699 (#10884) |
Pros
- + Lightest semi-auto here, made for long walks
- + Clean-running inertia system
- + Walnut and blued steel look
- + Shim kit and a Compact version for fit
Cons
- − Most expensive gun in this guide
- − Light loads under Benelli's minimum may not cycle
- − Light inertia guns kick more with heavy loads
Winchester SX4 20 Gauge
Best all-weather 20 gauge for ducks and turkeys

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 26 in): from about $930 · MSRP: $1,129.99 · Weight: 6 lb 10 oz
The SX4 is Winchester's gas semi-auto, and the 20-gauge version is a good pick if your season includes rain, mud and early-morning cold. Winchester lists a Black Nitride treatment that hardens the chamber and bore and resists corrosion, a Nickel Teflon coating on the bolt, a larger bolt handle and oversize bolt release, and a self-adjusting Active Valve gas system. It also has a drop-out trigger group, a reversible safety and a TRUGLO fiber-optic sight.
Winchester lists the 20-gauge, 26-inch composite model (#511205691) with a 3-inch chamber, a 4-round magazine (2¾-inch shells), Invector-Plus F, M and IC chokes, an Inflex 2 recoil pad, a 14¼-inch length of pull and a weight of 6 lb 10 oz.
Winchester's MSRP is $1,129.99. On October 12, 2026, Guns.com had that exact model new at $929.99, about $200 under MSRP, with 28-inch versions from about $970 and an SX4 Waterfowl Hunter in camo at $999.99. If you mainly hunt ducks with a 12 gauge, our best duck hunting shotguns guide covers the 12-gauge SX4 too.
| Action | Active Valve gas semi-auto |
| Chamber | 3 in |
| Barrel | 26 in, Invector-Plus F/M/IC |
| Capacity | 4 (2¾-in shells) |
| Weight | 6 lb 10 oz, per Winchester |
| MSRP | $1,129.99 (#511205691) |
Pros
- + Corrosion-resistant chamber, bore and bolt
- + Self-adjusting gas system
- + Big controls and reversible safety
- + About $200 under MSRP that day
Cons
- − Aluminum receiver feels less solid to some shooters than steel
- − Gas system needs regular cleaning
- − Plain black composite on the cheapest version
Mossberg SA-20 All Purpose Field
Best budget semi-auto

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 28 in): from about $470 · MSRP: $794 · Weight: 6 lb
Mossberg is one of the most-searched 20-gauge brands, and the SA-20 is its budget semi-auto. Mossberg describes its sub-gauge autoloaders as lightweight and quick-swinging, built for upland and woodland game and clays. The All Purpose Field model #75771 has a 28-inch vent-rib barrel, a 3-inch chamber, 4+1 capacity, a black synthetic stock with a 14¼-inch length of pull, a bead sight and a five-choke Sport Set. Mossberg lists it at 6 lb.
The price is the headline. Mossberg's own price for #75771 is $794. On October 12, 2026, Guns.com had a new one at $470.99 (SKU 75771, marked down from $588), which made it the cheapest semi-auto in this guide by a wide margin. The same search showed a 26-inch version at $668.99.
Want it for turkeys? The SA-20 Turkey (SKU 75801) has a 22-inch barrel in Mossy Oak Greenleaf, and the Guns.com listing shows it at 5.5 lb. It was from about $690 new that day. You give up the premium finishes and recoil systems of the Beretta and Benelli, but for a first semi-auto it's hard to beat on price.
| Action | Semi-auto |
| Chamber | 3 in |
| Barrel | 28 in vent rib, Sport Set (5 chokes) |
| Capacity | 4+1 |
| Weight | 6 lb, per Mossberg |
| MSRP | $794 (#75771) |
Pros
- + Cheapest semi-auto here by a wide margin
- + Light at 6 lb
- + Five chokes included
- + Turkey version available
Cons
- − Less refined than the Beretta, Benelli or Winchester
- − Bead sight only on the field model
- − Cheapest price was the 28-inch barrel; 26-inch cost more that day
Mossberg 500 Hunting All Purpose Field 20 Gauge
Best pump (field and home)

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 26 in): from about $420 · MSRP: $545 · Weight: 7 lb
The Mossberg 500 is one of the most familiar pump shotguns in America, and the 20-gauge Hunting All Purpose Field is the do-everything version. The Guns.com listing sums up the build: dual extractors, twin action bars, an ambidextrous tang safety, an anti-jam elevator and steel-to-steel lockup.
Mossberg lists model #56436 with a 26-inch vent-rib barrel, a 3-inch chamber, Accu-Set chokes, dual bead sights, a black synthetic stock with a 13.87-inch length of pull, 5+1 capacity and a weight of 7 lb. The extra weight helps soak up recoil.
Mossberg's price is $545. On October 12, 2026, Guns.com had it new at $423.99. If you also want a 20-gauge for the house, Mossberg's 500 Persuader with a 20-inch barrel was from about $480 new in the same family. Our best home defense shotguns guide covers that side in more depth.
| Action | Pump |
| Chamber | 3 in |
| Barrel | 26 in vent rib, Accu-Set chokes |
| Capacity | 5+1 |
| Weight | 7 lb, per Mossberg |
| MSRP | $545 (#56436) |
Pros
- + Proven, simple pump design
- + Ambidextrous tang safety
- + Runs any load because you work the action
- + Big family of barrels and versions
Cons
- − Heavier than the semi-autos
- − No recoil-reducing system
- − Slower follow-up shots than a semi-auto
Mossberg 500 Super Bantam All Purpose
Best youth 20 gauge

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 22 in): from about $420 · MSRP: $545 · Weight: 5.25 lb
"Youth model" is one of the fastest-rising 20-gauge searches right now, and the Super Bantam is the gun many families look at first. The key is fit: Mossberg's Super Bantam stock adjusts from 12 to 13 inches of length of pull with an included spacer, so the gun can grow with a young hunter for a few seasons. The Guns.com listing also points to a reduced trigger-to-grip distance and an easy-reach forend, both aimed at smaller hands and shorter arms.
Mossberg lists model #54210 with a 22-inch vent-rib barrel, a 3-inch chamber, Accu-Set chokes (the listing names F, M and IC), dual bead sights, 5+1 capacity, an overall length of 39.75 inches and a weight of 5.25 lb.
Mossberg's price is $545. On October 14, 2026, Guns.com had it new at $426.99; the same search showed Super Bantam Turkey, Field/Deer combo and Waterfowl versions from about $490. One caution for parents: a light 20 gauge still kicks, especially with 3-inch turkey loads. Many families start a new shooter on lighter target loads and work up.
| Action | Pump |
| Chamber | 3 in |
| Barrel | 22 in vent rib, Accu-Set chokes |
| Capacity | 5+1 |
| Length of pull | 12 to 13 in, adjustable with spacer |

Pros

- + Turkey, deer and waterfowl versions
- + Under $450 new that day
Cons
- − Light gun means more felt recoil with heavy loads
- − Pump action needs practice for young shooters
- − Plain synthetic finish
Stevens 555 20 Gauge
Best value over/under

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 26 in): from about $700 · MSRP: $869 · Weight: 5.5 lb (per listing)
Stevens searches are climbing fast, and the 555 is an over/under, the classic quail and grouse gun, at a price well below most doubles. Savage (Stevens' parent) says it's "light and handles fast" thanks to a lightweight aluminum receiver, and it comes with a Turkish walnut stock, chrome-lined carbon steel barrels, a single selective mechanical trigger, manual extractors, a tang-mounted safety and five choke tubes (full, improved modified, modified, improved cylinder and cylinder).
The Guns.com listing for the full-size 20-gauge 26-inch model (SKU 22166) shows a weight of 5.5 lb, which puts it in the same class as the Montefeltro for carry weight.
Stevens' MSRP is $869. On October 12, 2026, the cheapest two-barrel 20-gauge 555 on Guns.com was $699.99. Heads up: the search also shows single-barrel 555 Trap listings first, at lower prices, so make sure you're looking at the standard 555 over/under. Two shots instead of four or five is the trade-off, and manual extractors mean you pluck the empties out by hand.
| Action | Over/under, break action |
| Barrels | 26 in chrome-lined (24 in compact) |
| Chokes | 5: F, IM, M, IC, C |
| Trigger | Single selective, mechanical |
| Weight | 5.5 lb (Guns.com listing) |
| MSRP | $869 |
Pros
- + Real over/under at a budget price
- + Very light for carrying
- + Five chokes and walnut stock
- + Two chokes ready for two different shots
Cons
- − Only two shots
- − Manual extractors, not ejectors
- − Trap listings show up first in the search
Stevens 320 Field Grade 20 Gauge
Lowest price

Guns.com, new (20 ga, 26 in): from about $220 · MSRP: $289 to $339 (family) · Weight: 7.5 lb (per listing)
If the budget is tight, the Stevens 320 Field Grade is the cheapest way into a new 20-gauge shotgun in this guide, at less than a third of the Beretta's price. Stevens describes it as a pump with a proven rotary bolt and dual slide bars for smooth cycling, a black matte synthetic stock, bead sights, a bottom-loading tube magazine with 5+1 capacity and a modified choke tube included.
The Guns.com listing for the 20-gauge, 26-inch model (SKU 22436) shows a 3-inch chamber and a weight of 7.5 lb, the heaviest gun here. That weight helps tame recoil, though it's a lot to carry on a long upland walk. A 22-inch Field Grade Compact was also listed new at $220.99 for smaller shooters.
Stevens lists the 320 Field Grade family at $289 to $339. On October 12, 2026, Guns.com had the 26-inch 20 gauge new at $224.99, marked down from $259.99. It's less refined than the Mossberg 500, but as a first gun or a spare, the price is hard to argue with.
| Action | Pump, rotary bolt, dual slide bars |
| Chamber | 3 in (per listing) |
| Barrel | 26 in, modified choke included |
| Capacity | 5+1 |
| Weight | 7.5 lb (Guns.com listing) |
| MSRP | $289 to $339 (320 Field Grade family) |
Pros
- + Lowest price in this guide
- + Dual slide bars and rotary bolt
- + Compact version for smaller shooters
- + Weight helps soak up recoil
Cons
- − Heaviest gun here
- − Only one choke included

What to look for in a 20 gauge shotgun
Weight vs. recoil
A lighter gun is easier to carry but kicks more. If you're recoil-sensitive, a gas semi-auto with a recoil reducer (like the Beretta) is the softest-shooting option here.
Barrel length
26 inches is a popular all-around upland length; 28 inches swings smoother on doves and ducks; 22 to 24 inches handles better in turkey brush and on youth guns.
Chamber and shells
Most 20-gauge field guns today, including several here, have 3-inch chambers, so they fire both 2¾-inch and 3-inch shells. Lighter 7/8-ounce loads are pleasant for upland and practice; 3-inch magnum and TSS turkey loads hit much harder at both ends. Check your gun's minimum load if it's an inertia gun. For ammunition basics, our 12 gauge ammo guide explains shot sizes and loads that carry over to the 20.
Fit
Length of pull is the biggest fit factor: adult guns here run about 14 to 14½ inches, youth and compact models 12 to 13. Spacers and shim kits help a gun fit as a young hunter grows.
Buying a shotgun online
You buy online, and the gun ships to a licensed dealer (FFL) near you, where you pick it up after the background check. Some listings can't ship to certain states (several here can't ship to AK, CA, CT or HI). Our Is Guns.com legit? guide walks through fees and the process.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best 20 gauge shotgun?
For most hunters, the Beretta A300 Ultima: a soft-shooting gas semi-auto that covers upland, waterfowl and turkey, from about $900 new on Guns.com on October 12, 2026. If you mostly hunt upland birds and want the lightest semi-auto, the Benelli Montefeltro (5.8 lb) is the step up.
Is a 20 gauge good for home defense?
Many people choose a 20 gauge for home defense because it kicks less than a 12 gauge, which can mean faster, more controlled follow-up shots, especially for smaller-framed shooters. Short-barreled versions such as the Mossberg 500 Persuader and Beretta A300 Ultima Patrol exist for that role. Check your local laws.
Is a 20 gauge enough for ducks and turkeys?
Yes, at sensible ranges with the right loads. Many waterfowlers use a 20 gauge over decoys with non-toxic shot, and modern TSS turkey loads have made 20 gauges a popular turkey choice. For ducks, federal rules require non-toxic shot and a plug (three shells total). New to waterfowl? See our duck hunting gear for beginners list.
What's the best 20 gauge for a youth or small-framed shooter?
A gun with a short, adjustable stock: the Mossberg 500 Super Bantam (12 to 13 inch length of pull, 5.25 lb) was from about $420 new on October 12, 2026. The Benelli Montefeltro Compact and Stevens 320 Field Grade Compact are other short-stocked options.
How much does a good 20 gauge shotgun cost?
On October 12, 2026, new 20 gauges in this guide on Guns.com ran from about $220 (Stevens 320 Field Grade) to about $1,500 (Benelli Montefeltro). Good semi-autos started from about $470 (Mossberg SA-20), and the Beretta A300 Ultima and Winchester SX4 were both around $900.
Why isn't the Remington 870 on this list?
It's a great pump and a top search, but every new 20-gauge Remington 870 field gun in our Guns.com search was out of stock on October 12, 2026. We only ranked guns you could buy new that day.
Can I buy a 20 gauge shotgun online?
Yes. You buy online and the shotgun ships to a licensed dealer (FFL) you choose. You pick it up in person with ID after the background check. State and local laws and shipping restrictions still apply.
The bottom line
Buy the Beretta A300 Ultima if you want one 20 gauge for every season. Buy the Benelli Montefeltro if you walk all day for birds and want the lightest semi-auto, or the Stevens 555 for a light over/under on a budget. If money is tight, the Mossberg SA-20 gets you a semi-auto for under $500, and the Mossberg 500 Super Bantam is the sensible first gun for a young hunter. Whatever you buy, pattern it with the shells you'll hunt with and check your state's regulations before the season.
