Best 300 Blackout Ammo (2026): 8 Supersonic and Subsonic Loads

The best 300 Blackout ammo depends on one question first: are you shooting it with a suppressor or without one? The 300 Blackout was designed to do two jobs from the same short AR: fire supersonic bullets with roughly 7.62x39-class performance, and fire heavy subsonic bullets that, with a suppressor, are about as quiet as a centerfire rifle gets. Pick the wrong kind and you get a loud crack from your "quiet" rifle, or a bullet that won't open up on a deer.

We went through the 300 Blackout loads people are searching for right now and picked eight from one store, Ammunition Depot, so every price is apples to apples: three supersonic hunting loads, one lead-free load, one varmint load, one subsonic hunting and defense load, and two practice loads, plus the cheap steel-case ammo that shot up in searches this month. Every price, pack size and rating below was checked on the product page on October 12, 2026, and we did the cost-per-round math, including case and bundle tiers. This is a research guide built from those listings and owner reviews, not a hands-on test.

The short answer

Supersonic for hunting without a can, subsonic Sub-X for hunting with one, and cheap FMJ for everything else. Our picks:

Prices checked on Ammunition Depot on October 12, 2026, rechecked October 14, 2026, before tax and shipping. Ammo prices move fast, so tap through for today's number.

How we chose

Nobody at OSS America fired these loads for this guide. We started with what people are searching: over the last 30 days in the U.S., the top related searches for "300 blackout ammo" were "best 300 blackout ammo", "hornady 300 blackout ammo", "300 blackout ammo for sale" and "300 blackout ammo price", and the fastest-rising search was "wolf 300 blackout ammo". So we included Hornady's two most useful loads, Wolf as the budget pick, and price per round for everything.

Then we went through Ammunition Depot's 300 Blackout category, which showed 60 items on October 12, 2026, and shortlisted loads that were in stock (we judged that by the main Add to Cart button on each page) and covered supersonic hunting, subsonic hunting, lead-free, varmint and practice. For each we recorded every price tier the listing offered (box, range bundle, case), computed the cost per round, and read the owner reviews where there were any. Several good loads had no on-site reviews, and we say so rather than borrowing ratings from elsewhere. On some listings Ammunition Depot pools reviews with similar products, which we note. Velocity, energy and ballistic coefficient are the numbers printed on each listing; we didn't chronograph anything, and your barrel length will change them. We left out one Sig Sauer match listing because its description contradicted its own title and specs. Our Is Ammunition Depot legit? review covers the store itself: shipping, returns, age rules and restricted states.

Supersonic vs subsonic 300 Blackout, in plain English

Sound travels at roughly 1,100 to 1,130 feet per second, depending on air temperature. Any bullet faster than that makes a sharp crack as it flies, and a suppressor can't do anything about that crack because it happens outside the muzzle. Supersonic 300 Blackout loads (110 to 150 grains, listed here at 1,900 to 2,375 fps) are louder, flatter-shooting and hit harder, with roughly 1,175 to 1,380 ft-lb at the muzzle on these listings. They're the right choice for hunting without a suppressor and for most shooting past 100 yards.

Subsonic loads (190 to 220 grains, listed here at about 1,050 fps) stay under the speed of sound. With a suppressor, all you hear is the action cycling and a muffled report. The cost is energy (465 to 499 ft-lb on these listings) and a steep, looping trajectory. Most subsonic ammo uses target bullets that won't expand at that speed, so for hunting or defense use one designed to, like Hornady's Sub-X. Unsuppressed, subsonics are still loud; wear hearing protection.

Best 300 Blackout ammo 2026, price per round vs bullet weight at Ammunition Depot on October 14, 2026: supersonic Barnes VOR-TX 120 gr $2.37, Federal Fusion MSR 150 gr $2.07, Hornady BLACK 110 gr V-MAX $1.95, Winchester Deer Season XP 150 gr $1.70 ($1.53 by the case), Magtech 123 gr FMJ $0.96, Wolf 145 gr FMJ $0.75 ($0.62 by the case); subsonic Hornady 190 gr Sub-X $1.57, Sellier & Bellot 200 gr FMJ $1.10 ($0.99 by the case)
What one 300 Blackout round really costs, by bullet weight: Ammunition Depot price divided by rounds, October 14, 2026. Save it or pin it.

How to read the chart: the heavy subsonic loads sit on the right, the light supersonic loads on the left, and the hunting loads float to the top on price. Expanding hunting ammo runs about $1.57 to $2.37 a round; practice ammo runs about $0.62 to $1.10. The hollow rings show what buying in bulk saves: about 13 cents a round on the Wolf case, 11 cents on the S&B case and 17 cents on the Deer Season XP case. The one surprise is the Sub-X: an expanding subsonic hunting bullet that costs less per round than any supersonic hunting load here.

What a season of 300 Blackout costs

Say you shoot 200 rounds of practice and need one box of hunting ammo. On October 12, 2026 that was about $174.48 with the 200-round Wolf range bundle plus a box of Fusion MSR, or about $225.95 with four 50-round boxes of Magtech brass plus a box of Deer Season XP. Running suppressed? Ten boxes of S&B subsonic plus one box of Sub-X came to about $251.39. Prices before tax and shipping.

Federal Fusion MSR 300 Blackout 150 Gr Bonded Soft Point

Best 300 Blackout ammo overall (supersonic hunting)

Federal Fusion MSR 300 Blackout 150 Gr Bonded Soft Point ammo
Federal Fusion MSR 300 Blackout 150 gr, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $41 a 20-round box ($2.07 a round)

If you bought a 300 Blackout to hunt deer or hogs and you shoot it without a suppressor, this is the load to start with. Federal built Fusion MSR specifically for modern sporting rifles with short barrels, which is exactly what most 300 Blackout owners have. The listing says it uses clean-burning, low-flash powders tuned to get more speed out of compact barrels, and a jacket that is molecularly fused to a pressure-formed core so the bullet holds together on impact.

The numbers on the listing: a 150-grain bonded soft point at 1,900 fps and 1,202 ft-lb, with a ballistic coefficient of .330. Federal also notes it is designed to work with rifles that have free-floating firing pins, which covers most AR-15 style 300 Blackouts. On October 12, 2026 a box of 20 was $41.49 ($2.07 a round).

The owner record is small but clean: 3 reviews, all five stars. One owner called it some of the best 300 Blackout you can get and said they were stocking up for hunting season; another reported accurate, clean hits. A third admitted they hadn't tried it on hogs yet, so don't read the reviews as a hunting test. If you'd rather save a couple of dollars, Federal's plain Power-Shok 150-grain soft point was $39.99 a box the same day with the same listed 1,900 fps.

Hornady Subsonic 300 Blackout 190 Gr Sub-X

Best subsonic 300 Blackout ammo (suppressed hunting and defense)

Hornady Subsonic 300 Blackout 190 Gr Sub-X ammo
Hornady Subsonic 300 Blackout 190 gr Sub-X, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $31 a 20-round box ($1.57 a round)

"Hornady 300 Blackout ammo" is the most-searched brand query for the round, and for suppressor owners, Hornady's Subsonic 190-grain Sub-X is the load that matters. Unlike the match and FMJ bullets in most subsonic ammo, the listing describes a lead-core bullet with long grooves in the jacket, a flat profile, and a Flex Tip insert inside the hollow point cavity, designed to expand reliably at low speed.

The listing gives 1,050 fps and 465 ft-lb, says the load meets or exceeds FBI Protocol terminal-ballistic test requirements, and lists its suggested uses as self-defense and suppressed shooting. On October 12, 2026 a box of 20 was $31.49 ($1.57 a round), which is cheaper than any supersonic hunting load in this guide.

The trade-off is physics, not quality: at about 1,050 fps, a subsonic bullet drops much faster than a supersonic one and carries far less energy (465 ft-lb versus roughly 1,200 for the 150-grain supersonic loads). Keep shots close and know your rifle's subsonic zero. There were no on-site reviews on this listing yet.

  • − Low energy and steep drop: a close-range load
  • − No on-site reviews yet
  • − Some rifles need tuning to cycle subsonics

Winchester Deer Season XP 300 Blackout 150 Gr Extreme Point

Best budget 300 Blackout deer load

Winchester Deer Season XP 300 Blackout 150 Gr Extreme Point ammo
Winchester Deer Season XP 300 Blackout 150 gr, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $34 a 20-round box ($1.70 a round), or $305.49 for 200 ($1.53 a round)

Winchester's Deer Season XP is the cheapest expanding supersonic hunting load we found in stock, and it had the most owner reviews of any hunting load here. Winchester says the Extreme Point bullet has an oversized polymer tip for a larger impact diameter, which they say transfers more energy and makes larger wound channels. The listing gives the same 1,900 fps and 1,202 ft-lb as Federal's 150-grain loads.

On October 12, 2026 a box of 20 was $33.99 ($1.70 a round), and the listing offered a 200-round case for $305.49 ($1.53 a round), so a hunting camp can buy together. The listing title was also marked "Rebate Eligible", so check Ammunition Depot's rebate page before you buy.

Owners gave it 7 reviews averaging 5 out of 5. One called it quality supersonic 300 Blackout ammo and "pretty accurate for a 300 load"; others said it had no misfires and cycles cleanly. Most reviews are about function and price, not results on deer.

Barnes VOR-TX 300 Blackout 120 Grain TAC-TX Boat Tail

Best lead-free 300 Blackout ammo

Barnes VOR-TX 300 Blackout 120 Grain TAC-TX Boat Tail ammo
Barnes VOR-TX 20-round box as shown on the 300 Blackout 120 gr TAC-TX listing (the box label does not show the caliber). Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $47 a 20-round box ($2.37 a round)

If you hunt somewhere that requires non-lead ammunition, or you just want a bullet that holds together, Barnes is the usual answer. VOR-TX loads the 120-grain TAC-TX, an all-copper boat-tail bullet. Barnes says it retains virtually all its weight and expands to about double its diameter. Because copper is lighter than lead, a 120-grain copper bullet is longer than a lead one of the same weight, and Barnes drives it fast: the listing gives 2,100 fps and 1,175 ft-lb.

On October 14, 2026 a box of 20 was $47.49 ($2.37 a round), the most expensive per round in this guide. There were no on-site reviews on October 12. Two other lead-free options were in stock the same day: Federal's Power-Shok Copper 120-grain hollow point at $36.49 a box (five stars from three owners, though their reviews were about loading and shipping).

All-copper bullets need speed to open up, so this is a supersonic load; it isn't the answer for a quiet, suppressed shot. And check your own state and area rules, because non-lead requirements vary.

Hornady BLACK 300 Blackout 110 Grain V-MAX

Hornady BLACK 20-round box as shown on the 300 Blackout 110 gr V-MAX listing. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $39 a 20-round box ($1.95 a round)

Hornady's BLACK line is built around one idea: ammo that will "fit, feed and function" across many platforms, from direct-impingement and piston ARs to bolt guns, suppressed or not, per the listing. The 110-grain V-MAX load is the lightest, fastest bullet in this guide at a listed 2,375 fps and 1,377 ft-lb, and the listing suggests it for target use and varmint hunting.

That makes it the pick for coyotes and other varmints, not deer (use #1 or #4 for those). On October 14, 2026 a box of 20 was $38.99 ($1.95 a round) and in stock; it had no reviews on October 12. A BLACK 208-grain A-MAX Subsonic target load ($35.99 a box) is there for suppressed rifles.

Sellier & Bellot 300 Blackout Subsonic 200 Grain FMJ

Best subsonic practice ammo

Sellier & Bellot 300 Blackout Subsonic 200 Grain FMJ ammo
Sellier & Bellot 300 AAC Blackout Subsonic 200 gr FMJ box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $22 a 20-round box ($1.10 a round), or $992.49 for 1,000 ($0.99 a round)

For cheap suppressed training, Sellier & Bellot's 200-grain subsonic full metal jacket was the best-reviewed 300 Blackout listing we found: 49 reviews averaging 4.9 out of 5 (Ammunition Depot notes that the count includes similar products). The listing gives 1,060 fps, new brass and boxer primers, so it's reloadable.

On October 12, 2026 a box of 20 was $21.99 ($1.10 a round), and a 1,000-round case was $992.49 ($0.99 a round). One owner said they had bought 1,060 rounds and loved it; another called it consistent, accurate and a pleasure to shoot. One useful warning from a verified buyer: the cartridges are long enough that they gave trouble in certain magazines. They ran in Magpul and Colt AR mags but not in a Magpul 50-round drum. Test your magazines with a box first.

If you want the lowest subsonic price per round regardless of brand, the Hornady Frontier 208-grain FMJ Subsonic was $19.49 for 20 or $158.49 for 200 ($0.79 a round, marked down from $175.99). It had no reviews and no listed velocity, which is why S&B gets the spot.

Magtech Tactical 300 Blackout 123 Gr FMJ

Best brass-cased supersonic practice ammo

Magtech Tactical 300 AAC Blackout 123 gr FMJ, 50-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $48 a 50-round box ($0.96 a round)

For supersonic practice in brass cases, Magtech's 123-grain full metal jacket is the value pick. It comes in 50-round boxes, and on October 12, 2026 a box was $47.99, just $0.96 a round. The listing gives 2,230 fps (2,231 fps from a 16-inch barrel in the description) and a 0.33 ballistic coefficient, with reloadable brass and non-corrosive boxer primers.

Owners like it: 18 reviews averaging 5 out of 5 (again, the count can include similar products). One owner said it cycles well with less recoil than other loads at this weight and bought it again; another put 300 rounds through a 300 Blackout pistol at 25 and 50 yards and was well pleased.

The 123-grain bullet is lighter than most hunting loads, so confirm your zero with your hunting ammo before the season.

Wolf Polyformance 300 Blackout 145 Grain FMJ

Cheapest 300 Blackout ammo per round

Wolf Polyformance 300 Blackout 145 Grain FMJ ammo
Wolf Polyformance 300 AAC Blackout 145 gr FMJ, steel case, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $15 a 20-round box ($0.75 a round), or $132.99 for 200 ($0.66 a round), or $310.99 for 500 ($0.62 a round)

"Wolf 300 Blackout ammo" is the search that jumped in the last 30 days, and the reason is obvious: it's the cheapest way to feed the gun. Wolf Polyformance uses a polymer-coated steel case, a non-corrosive Berdan primer and a 145-grain bi-metal FMJ bullet (copper-plated steel jacket, so it attracts a magnet, but not steel core, per the listing). Listed velocity is 1,985 fps.

Prices on October 12, 2026: $14.99 for 20 ($0.75 a round), a 200-round range bundle at $132.99 ($0.66 a round, down from $144.99), or a 500-round case at $310.99 ($0.62 a round, down from $337.99). That case price is the lowest per round in this guide.

Owners rated it 4.8 out of 5 (15 reviews). The honest note came from one verified buyer who said it worked perfectly but ran noticeably dirtier than their other ammo. Know the limits before you buy: steel cases can't be reloaded, and some indoor ranges ban steel-cased or magnet-attracting bullets, so check your range's rules.

Which should you buy?

What to look for in 300 Blackout ammo

Match the ammo to your suppressor plan

This is the big one. If you never plan to run a suppressor, buy supersonic ammo for everything; you get more energy and a flatter path. If you do run a can, keep a subsonic load for quiet shooting and a supersonic one for longer shots, and zero for each, because they will hit in very different places. Our Banish 9 suppressor review explains how suppressors and subsonic ammo work together, even though that can is for 9mm.

Hunting bullets vs target bullets

FMJ, open-tip match and A-MAX target bullets are for paper and steel. For deer and hogs, pick a bullet built to expand at the speed it will actually hit: bonded soft points (Fusion), polymer-tipped hunting bullets (Extreme Point), all-copper bullets (TAC-TX), or, at subsonic speed, a bullet designed for it (Sub-X). Many states set rules for big-game cartridges and bullets, so check yours.

Will it cycle in your gun?

Some 300 Blackout ARs only cycle one kind (supersonic or subsonic) reliably, with or without a suppressor. Run a box of any new load through your magazines before you buy a case.

Buying ammo online

Ammunition Depot ships to your door in most states, but age rules apply and some states and cities restrict ammo shipments or require extra steps. Our Ammunition Depot review walks through the details. Still picking the rifle? See our top 10 AR-15 rifles at Ammunition Depot. If you also shoot a 5.56 or .308, our best 5.56 ammo and best .308 ammo guides use the same cost-per-round approach.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 300 Blackout ammo?

For hunting without a suppressor, Federal Fusion MSR 150-grain ($41.49 a box of 20 at Ammunition Depot on October 12, 2026). For suppressed hunting or home defense, Hornady Subsonic 190-grain Sub-X ($31.49). For practice, Sellier & Bellot 200-grain subsonic FMJ ($1.10 a round) or Magtech 123-grain FMJ ($0.96 a round).

What is the difference between supersonic and subsonic 300 Blackout?

Supersonic loads (110 to 150 grains, about 1,900 to 2,400 fps on these listings) travel faster than sound, so they crack even through a suppressor, but they shoot flatter and carry more energy. Subsonic loads (190 to 220 grains, about 1,050 fps) stay below the speed of sound and are much quieter with a suppressor, but drop fast and carry less than half the energy.

What is the best 300 Blackout ammo for deer?

A supersonic expanding bullet of about 150 grains is the common choice: Federal Fusion MSR ($2.07 a round) or Winchester Deer Season XP ($1.70). If you hunt with a suppressor and keep shots close, Hornady's 190-grain Sub-X is designed to expand at subsonic speed. Check your state's rules for deer cartridges.

Is Hornady 300 Blackout ammo good?

Hornady makes two of the most useful 300 Blackout loads: the Subsonic 190-grain Sub-X, which the listing says meets FBI Protocol test requirements and is designed to expand at subsonic speed, and BLACK 110-grain V-MAX for varmints. Neither had on-site reviews at Ammunition Depot on October 12, 2026, so the case for them rests on Hornady's design and published data.

Is Wolf 300 Blackout ammo any good?

It's the cheapest way to shoot: $0.62 a round by the 500 on October 12, 2026, and it had a 4.8 out of 5 owner rating. The trade-offs are a steel case you can't reload, a bullet jacket that attracts a magnet (some ranges ban that), and owner reports that it runs dirtier. It's for practice, not hunting.

How much does 300 Blackout ammo cost per round?

On October 12, 2026 at Ammunition Depot, practice ammo ran about $0.62 to $1.10 a round depending on pack size, subsonic hunting ammo about $1.57, and supersonic hunting ammo about $1.53 to $2.37, before tax and shipping.

The bottom line

Most 300 Blackout owners need two loads, not one: a hunting load and a cheap practice load, and if you own a suppressor, a subsonic version of each. Without a can, hunt with Federal Fusion MSR or Winchester Deer Season XP and practice with Magtech or Wolf. With a can, hunt close with Hornady Subsonic Sub-X and train with Sellier & Bellot subsonic. Prices move constantly, so compare cost per round on the day you buy, and zero with the exact load you'll hunt with.
