Best 5.56 Ammo (2026): 8 Loads for Range, Match, Defense and Hunting

The best 5.56 ammo for most AR owners is boring: clean, reliable 55-grain FMJ bought by the case at the lowest price per round you can find. Then you add a few boxes of something better for the jobs that matter: a heavy match load for precision, a bonded soft point for home defense, the right bullet for varmints or deer.

We compared the 5.56 and .223 loads people are searching for right now and picked eight from one store, Ammunition Depot, so every price is apples to apples: four bulk FMJ loads (two M193, two M855 green tip), a 77-grain match load, a duty load and two hunting loads. Every price, pack size and rating was checked on the product page on October 5, 2026, and we did the cost-per-round math. This is a research guide built from those listings and owner reviews, not a hands-on test.

The short answer

For most AR owners: a case of PMC X-TAC M193 for practice, plus a few boxes of a bonded load for defense. Our picks:

Prices checked on Ammunition Depot on October 5, 2026, before tax and shipping. Ammo prices change daily, so tap through for today's number.

How we chose

Nobody at OSS America shot these loads for this guide. We started with search demand: over the last 30 days in the U.S., the top related searches for "5.56 ammo" were "best 5.56 ammo", "bulk ammo", "5.56 ammo sale" and "green tip", and "cheap 5.56 ammo" was up 80%. Then we went through Ammunition Depot's combined .223/5.56 category, which listed 157 products on October 5, 2026.

We recorded every pack size and price for the strongest candidates, computed the cost per round for the smallest pack and the best-value pack, and read the owner reviews, including the critical ones. Velocity and energy figures are the numbers printed on each listing; we didn't chronograph anything. We dropped two loads during research: a Lake City M855 "unpainted tip" case whose photo showed a box marked green tip (we couldn't confirm what ships), and a Barnes 5.56 hunting load whose only listing photo showed a .308 box. Our Is Ammunition Depot legit? review covers the store itself.

5.56 NATO vs .223 Remington: check your barrel first

The two look identical, but 5.56 NATO is generally loaded hotter and 5.56 chambers have more room in front of the case. PMC prints this right on its X-TAC 5.56 boxes: its 5.56mm ammunition "is only to be used in rifles labeled 5.56mm and must NOT be used in those rifles labeled .223." The reverse is the safe direction: .223 Remington ammo is generally fine in a 5.56 chamber. Look at the marking on your barrel (5.56, .223 Wylde or .223 Rem) and follow your rifle maker's manual. In this guide, the four bulk FMJ loads are 5.56 NATO; the match, duty and hunting loads are .223 Remington.

Prices are the current prices on each Ammunition Depot product page on October 5, 2026, before tax and shipping. Ammo prices change daily. Best-value pack = the pack with the lowest price per round that day (— = box was already the best value). Cost per round = price ÷ rounds, computed by OSS America. Velocities are as listed by the retailer; owner ratings are Ammunition Depot's on-site reviews the same day.

What one round really costs: Ammunition Depot price divided by rounds, smallest pack vs best-value pack, October 5, 2026. Save it or pin it.

How to read the chart: for bulk FMJ, the case is where the savings are. Winchester's green tip dropped about 16 cents a round from the 20-round box to the case; PMC's packs are already cheap, so the case saves only about 4 to 5 cents. Purpose-built loads cost two to five times as much per round, which is why most shooters practice with FMJ and keep a smaller supply of match or defensive ammo.

What it costs to stock up

A 1,000-round case on October 5, 2026: $498.49 for PMC X-TAC M193, $515.49 for PMC M855 green tip, $564.49 for Winchester M855 and $639.49 for Winchester M193 (or $612.39 for Winchester's separate 1,000-round bulk box). Add a case of 200 Federal LE Tactical ($358.79) and you have a practice supply and a defensive supply for about about $855. Prices before tax and shipping.

PMC X-TAC 5.56 NATO 55 Grain FMJ-BT, XM193

Best 5.56 ammo overall

PMC X-TAC 5.56 NATO 55 Grain FMJ-BT, XM193 ammo
PMC X-TAC 5.56 NATO XM193 55 gr FMJ-BT, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $11 for 20 · about $500 for a 1,000-round case (49.8¢ a round)

If you want one 5.56 load to stack deep and shoot a lot, this is the one we'd point you to. PMC X-TAC XM193 is the classic 55-grain full metal jacket boat tail, the military M193 recipe, loaded in new, reloadable brass with non-corrosive boxer primers. Ammunition Depot lists it at 3,270 fps and 1,306 ft-lb, the fastest load in this guide on paper.

It also had the best combination of price and owner record we found. On October 5, 2026, a 20-round box was $10.89, a 300-round range bundle $150.99 and a 1,000-round case $498.49 (marked down from $624.99), or 49.8¢ a round, the lowest of any new-production load here. It had 233 reviews averaging 5 out of 5, 92% of them five stars.

Recent owners back that up. A September 2026 reviewer reported no duds or misfires across all his ARs and noted that, because it isn't green tip, it's allowed at more ranges. A May 2026 reviewer ran it for six hours through multiple ARs, suppressed and unsuppressed, and said it worked flawlessly, even in a picky forced-reset-trigger setup.

PMC X-TAC 5.56 NATO 62 Grain Green Tip LAP (M855)

Best green tip (M855)

PMC X-TAC 5.56 NATO 62 Grain Green Tip LAP (M855) ammo
PMC X-TAC 5.56 NATO M855 62 gr green tip, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $11 for 20 · about $515 for 1,000 (51.5¢ a round)

"Green tip" is one of the top 5.56 searches right now, and this is the green tip to beat on price and reviews. PMC's X-TAC M855 uses the 62-grain SS109-style bullet, which the listing describes as a lead core with a hardened steel penetrator under the jacket. It's listed at 3,120 fps and 1,323 ft-lb.

On October 5, 2026, a 20-round box was $11.09 (regular $19.99), a 300-round bundle $160.49 and a 1,000-round case $515.49, which is 51.5¢ a round, less than 2 cents more than PMC's own M193. It had 236 reviews averaging 5, with 94% five stars; one August 2026 reviewer said he'd shot thousands of X-TAC rounds without a misfire.

Know why you're buying it. The heavier 62-grain bullet is the standard for rifles with 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrels and it's better at punching through light barriers. But many ranges ban steel-core ammo, especially indoors, and steel-core bullets can damage steel targets. If you only plink on paper, M193 is cheaper and goes more places.

Cons

  • − Steel core: banned at many ranges and hard on steel targets
  • − 5.56 NATO pressure: not for .223-only chambers, per PMC
  • − Slightly pricier than M193 for no benefit on paper targets

Winchester Lake City 5.56 55 Grain M193 FMJ (WM193K)

Best name-brand M193

Winchester Lake City 5.56 55 Grain M193 FMJ (WM193K) ammo

Ammunition Depot: about $16 for 20 · about $81 for 120 · about $640 for 1,000

Winchester's white-box M193 is the other 55-grain FMJ you'll see in every AR owner's closet. Ammunition Depot's listing says it's produced to U.S. military specification, in new, reloadable brass, and lists it at 3,180 fps and 1,235 ft-lb.

It costs more than PMC. On October 5, 2026, a 20-round box was $15.99, a 120-round bundle $80.99 and a 1,000-round case $639.49 (63.9¢ a round). If you want Winchester in bulk, the separate 1,000-round Winchester USA M193 bulk box was $612.39 that day (61.2¢ a round), a little cheaper than the case. We cover that box in our Winchester USA 5.56 M193 bulk review.

Owner reviews are few (9) but all five stars. One July 2026 buyer said he'd shot thousands of rounds of white box without an issue. A 2025 reviewer who normally runs PMC X-TAC liked it but noticed a bigger muzzle flash and a slightly dirtier burn than PMC.

Winchester 5.56 NATO M855 Green Tip 62 Grain FMJ

Best American-made green tip

Winchester 5.56 NATO M855 Green Tip 62 Grain FMJ ammo
Winchester 5.56 NATO M855 62 gr green tip, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $14 for 20 · about $565 for 1,000 (56.4¢ a round)

Winchester's M855 is the American-made alternative to PMC's green tip. It's the same idea: a 62-grain FMJ with a small steel cylinder in the core, in new, reloadable brass, listed at 3,060 fps. The listing is blunt about one thing: it says green tip is not acceptable at indoor ranges because it damages them. Check your range's rules before you buy a case.

On October 5, 2026 the 1,000-round case was $564.49, marked down from $824.59, or 56.4¢ a round. That's only about 5 cents a round more than PMC's M855. Smaller packs are much pricier per round: $14.49 for 20 and $195.49 for a 280-round bundle.

It had 28 reviews averaging 5. Most are short and positive ("cycled just fine"); one buyer mentioned a couple of dented rounds, which is worth a quick inspection before you load magazines.

PMC X-TAC Match 223 Remington 77 Gr OTM

Best 77-grain match load

PMC X-TAC Match 223 Remington 77 Gr OTM ammo
PMC X-TAC Match .223 Rem 77 gr OTM, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $23 for 20 ($1.16 a round)

If your AR has a 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrel and a magnified optic, a heavy match bullet is where you'll see tighter groups and better performance at distance. PMC X-TAC Match uses a 77-grain Sierra open tip match (OTM) bullet, and Ammunition Depot lists it at 2,790 fps and 1,296 ft-lb.

Note that it's loaded as .223 Remington, not 5.56 NATO. That's fine in a 5.56 chamber; it's the reverse (5.56 in a .223-only gun) that makers warn against. On October 5, 2026 a 20-round box was $23.29, marked down from $32.89, and a 200-round case was $232.99, which actually worked out to the same $1.16 a round. At roughly twice the price of bulk FMJ, it's for zeroing, precision work and longer shots, not plinking. There were no owner reviews on this listing yet.

Federal LE Tactical 223 Remington 55 Gr Bonded SP

Best home-defense / duty load

Federal LE Tactical 223 Remington 55 Gr Bonded SP ammo
Federal LE Tactical .223 Rem 55 gr bonded soft point, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $37 for 20 · about $360 for 200 ($1.79 a round)

FMJ isn't what you want in a home-defense AR. Federal's LE Tactical 55-grain bonded soft point is a law-enforcement load whose listing describes a jacket bonded to the core for consistent expansion and barrier performance, low-flash powder that won't disrupt night vision, and nickel-plated cases with crimped primers. It's listed at 3,150 fps and 1,210 ft-lb. Those are the maker's and retailer's claims; we haven't tested them.

On October 5, 2026 a 20-round box was $37.29 (regular $48.00) and a 200-round case $358.79, or $1.79 a round. Buy enough to fill your magazines and run a couple through your rifle to confirm it feeds and to check your zero; expanding bullets often hit a little differently than FMJ. It's loaded as .223 Remington, which is fine in 5.56 chambers. No owner reviews on the listing yet.

Federal Fusion MSR 223 Remington 62 Gr Bonded Soft Point

Best deer / hog load for the AR

Federal Fusion MSR 223 Remington 62 Gr Bonded Soft Point ammo
Federal Fusion MSR .223 Rem 62 gr bonded soft point, 20-round box. Photo: Ammunition Depot listing.

Ammunition Depot: about $48 for 20 ($2.40 a round)

Where it's legal to hunt deer and hogs with a .223/5.56, you want a tough, bonded bullet, not a varmint or FMJ load. Federal's Fusion MSR is built specifically for modern sporting rifles. The listing says it's tuned for shorter AR barrels with low-flash, fast-burning powder, uses a primer compatible with free-floating firing pins, and has a jacket fused to the core to hold together. It's a 62-grain bonded soft point listed at 2,750 fps and 1,041 ft-lb, with a suggested use of big game.

On October 5, 2026 a 20-round box was $47.99, the most per round in this guide, but you'll only need a box or two a season. It's loaded as .223 Remington. Check your state's minimum caliber rules for deer before you go; some states don't allow .22 centerfire for big game. No owner reviews on the listing yet.

Best varmint load

Ammunition Depot: about $37 for 20 ($1.85 a round)

For coyotes, groundhogs and prairie dogs, a polymer-tipped varmint bullet is the classic choice. Hornady Varmint Express pairs Hornady's 55-grain V-Max with a listed 3,240 fps and 1,282 ft-lb, and the listing describes it as built for rapid expansion on varmints.

On October 5, 2026 it was $36.99 for a 20-round box, sold by the box only. It's loaded as .223 Remington, safe in .223 and 5.56 chambers. The listing photo shows the Varmint Express box without the caliber label visible, so double-check the caliber on the product page when you order. No owner reviews on the listing yet.

Which should you buy?

What to look for in 5.56 ammo

M193 vs M855 (green tip)

M193 is a 55-grain FMJ with a lead core: cheaper, faster and allowed at more ranges. M855 is a 62-grain FMJ with a steel penetrator, marked with a green tip on most U.S. boxes. It's built for light barriers, but many ranges ban it, and it's hard on steel targets. For paper and plinking, M193 wins on price.

Match your bullet weight to your barrel twist

Lighter bullets (55 grain) stabilize in almost any AR barrel. Heavy bullets (69 to 77 grain) need a faster twist, typically 1:7 or 1:8, which most modern ARs have. If your barrel is 1:9 or slower, check before buying heavy match ammo.

Use the right bullet for the job

FMJ is for practice. For home defense, look for a bonded soft point or a purpose-built defensive bullet. For varmints, a polymer-tipped bullet like V-Max. For deer and hogs (where .22 centerfire is legal), a bonded or monolithic hunting bullet like Fusion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best 5.56 ammo for the range?

For most AR owners, PMC X-TAC XM193 55-grain FMJ. On October 5, 2026 it was $498.49 for 1,000 (49.8¢ a round) at Ammunition Depot, with 233 owner reviews averaging 5 out of 5.

What is the cheapest 5.56 ammo per round?

Among new-production loads we checked on October 5, 2026, PMC X-TAC XM193 by the 1,000-round case at 49.8¢ a round, followed by PMC X-TAC M855 at 51.5¢. Smaller boxes ran about 54 to 80 cents a round.

Can I shoot 5.56 in a .223 rifle?

Not unless your rifle maker says so. PMC prints on its 5.56 boxes that the ammo must not be used in rifles labeled .223. Going the other way, .223 Remington ammo is generally fine in a 5.56 chamber. Check the marking on your barrel and your owner's manual.

What is green tip 5.56 ammo?

Green tip usually marks M855 (SS109-type) ammo: a 62-grain FMJ with a steel penetrator in the core. It's designed to get through light barriers, but many ranges ban it, especially indoors, and Winchester's own listing says it isn't acceptable at indoor ranges.

What 5.56 ammo is best for home defense?

A bonded soft point or purpose-built defensive load, not FMJ. Federal LE Tactical 55-grain bonded soft point was about $37 for 20 on October 5, 2026. Fire a few through your rifle to confirm feeding and zero.

Is 77-grain 5.56 ammo better?

For precision and longer shots, often yes, if your barrel has a fast enough twist (typically 1:7 or 1:8). For plinking, 55-grain FMJ costs much less. PMC X-TAC Match 77-grain OTM was about $1.16 a round on October 5, 2026.

Is it cheaper to buy 5.56 in bulk?

Usually. Winchester M855 dropped from 72.5¢ a round in a 20-round box to 56.4¢ by the case on October 5, 2026. PMC's discounts were smaller because its boxes were already cheap.

The bottom line

Buy a case of PMC X-TAC XM193 for practice; it had the lowest price per round of any new ammo we checked and the strongest owner record. Pick up PMC X-TAC M855 only if you need green tip, and keep a few boxes of Federal LE Tactical for the rifle you'd grab at night. Ammo prices move constantly, so compare cost per round on the day you buy, and check your barrel marking before you order 5.56.
