Best Ice Fishing Rod and Reel Combos for Walleye and Panfish

The right ice combo is the difference between watching a flasher mark fish all morning and actually putting walleye and slab crappie on the ice. Too stiff and you never see a light panfish bite. Too soft and a 25-inch walleye takes your jig wherever it wants. Searches for ice fishing rods jumped this month as the season ramps up, and "walleye ice fishing rod" is breaking out.
We compared eight rod-and-reel combos you can order right now, from a $33 Ugly Stik to a $100 inline setup, and matched each one's lengths and powers to the fish you're targeting. This is research-based, not a hands-on test: it's built from the makers' specs, live store listings and owner ratings. Every price below was checked on October 30, 2026.

How we chose
This guide is built from research, not from our own time on the ice. We started with what anglers are searching: over the last 30 days Google's related searches for "ice fishing rod" were led by "ice fishing rod and reel," "ice fishing rods" and "walleye ice fishing rod" (a Breakout), with "Ugly Stik ice fishing rod" and "ice fishing rod and reel combo" close behind.
Then we went through all 51 items in Sportsman's Warehouse's ice rods, reels and combos category on October 30, 2026 and opened every combo, size by size, to check whether it could actually ship to your home. That step mattered: several listings showed "in stock" in the page data but "Ship To Home Unavailable" on the live page, including the 13 Fishing Infrared 30" combo and every size of the Pflueger Trion/Fenwick HMG combo. We left those out. From what was left, we favored combos with a real owner track record where one exists and chose a lineup that covers panfish, walleye and pike. We compared length and power options, rod material, reel type and bearings, line rating and price.
One honest note: ice combos get few reviews. Only the GX2 has a meaningful number, and several picks are new this season.

Prices and Ship To Home availability checked October 30, 2026 at Sportsman's Warehouse, for the linked size; they change often. UL = ultralight, L = light, ML = medium-light, M = medium, MH = medium-heavy. "+" = longer sizes cost more.
How to read the chart: each dot is one size you can order. Hollow dots are ultralight, light or quick-tip rods for panfish; blue dots are medium-light and medium for perch and walleye; orange dots are medium-heavy for big walleye, pike and lake trout. The takeaway: panfish-only anglers are covered by the Lew's or Capture Panfish for $40 to $60, while the Capture Walleye, Pflueger Trion and Ugly Stik Carbon each run from short sizes up to a 36" medium-heavy for pike.

Ugly Stik GX2 Ice Fishing Combo
Best overall value

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $33 (sale, was $42.29), ships to home · Sizes: 28" medium, 30" medium-heavy · Reel: size 20 spinning
"Ugly Stik ice fishing rod" is one of the most common searches in this category, and the GX2 Ice combo is the one with the most owners behind it. On October 30 it had 44 ratings averaging 4.6 stars at Sportsman's Warehouse, more than any other ice combo in that store's lineup, and the GX2 Ice listing on Amazon showed a matching 4.6 stars from 34 ratings. At $32.77 for either length, it was also one of the cheapest name-brand combos that day.
You get the same idea that made the open-water Ugly Stik famous, cut down for the hole: a genuine Ugly Stik blank, one-piece stainless steel guides (no inserts to pop out when a guide hits the ice), a twist-lock reel seat and an EVA handle that doesn't feel like a frozen pipe. The reel is a size 20 spinning reel with one ball bearing and a ported aluminum spool.
Pick the 28-inch medium (rated for 4-8 lb line) for perch, eater walleye and bigger crappie, or the 30-inch medium-heavy (6-10 lb line) if walleye and the occasional pike are the main event. One bearing is basic, and owners who want buttery-smooth drag for light line usually step up to a multi-bearing reel. As a first combo or a spare, though, the price and track record are hard to beat. One owner on the Sportsman's page put it simply: they've used Ugly Stiks for years and can't recall ever breaking one.
| Sizes | 28 in M (4-8 lb line), 30 in MH (6-10 lb) |
| Rod | Ugly Stik blank, one-piece stainless guides, EVA |
| Reel | Size 20, 1 bearing, aluminum spool |
| Rating | 4.6 stars, 44 ratings (Sportsman's) |
Pros
- + Most-reviewed ice combo at Sportsman's: 4.6 stars from 44 ratings
- + About $33 on sale for either length
- + One-piece stainless guides with no inserts to crack
Cons
- − One-bearing reel is basic
- − No ultralight version for tiny panfish jigs
- − No published rod weight
13 Fishing Capture Walleye Spinning Ice Fishing Combo
Best for walleye

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $60, ships to home · Sizes: 26" ML, 28" ML, 28" M, 36" M, 36" MH · Reel: 2+1 bearing spinning
"Walleye ice fishing rod" is a Breakout search this month, and 13 Fishing built a combo with that exact name. The Capture Walleye is new at Sportsman's Warehouse for this season (no reviews yet on October 30).
The lineup is the reason it ranks here. One model gives you five choices at the same $59.99 price: 26" and 28" medium-light for jigging spoons in a shelter, 28" medium as a do-everything walleye stick, and 36" medium or medium-heavy for deadsticking minnows or fighting fish away from the hole on open ice. The rod is solid fiberglass with a hi-vis tip for spotting light bites and a cork handle; the reel has 2 bearings plus instant anti-reverse and a slide drag.
Fiberglass gives up some sensitivity to carbon, but it's tough and forgiving when a big walleye surges.
| Sizes | 26" ML, 28" ML, 28" M, 36" M, 36" MH |
| Rod | Solid fiberglass, hi-vis tip, cork handle |
| Reel | 2+1 bearings, slide drag |
| Reviews | New, none yet |
Pros
- + Five walleye-focused sizes, one price
- + Hi-vis tip for light bites
- + Cork handle and polished-insert guides
Cons
- − New for the season: no owner reviews yet
- − Fiberglass blank is less sensitive than carbon
- − Basic 2-bearing reel for the money
13 Fishing Capture Panfish Spinning Ice Fishing Combo
Best for panfish

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $60, ships to home · Sizes: 24" UL, 25" L, 27" UL · Extra: built-in spring bobber
Bluegill and crappie under the ice often bite so lightly that the rod tip never moves. The Capture Panfish answers that with an integrated Custom Evolve titanium spring bobber on the tip, a thin wire that bends at the faintest touch, so you see the bite before you'd feel it. Spring bobbers are a long-standing panfish trick.
It shares the Capture Walleye's reel, fiberglass blank and cork handle, in short, light sizes: 24" ultralight, 25" light and 27" ultralight.
It's new this season with no reviews yet, and it costs about $20 more than the Lew's. You're paying for the spring bobber.
| Sizes | 24" UL, 25" L, 27" UL |
| Rod | Solid fiberglass, titanium spring bobber, cork |
| Reel | 2+1 bearings, slide drag |
| Reviews | New, none yet |
Pros
- + Built-in titanium spring bobber shows light bites
- + Short ultralight and light sizes made for panfish
- + Same cork handle and 2+1 reel as the walleye version
Cons
- − No reviews yet
- − Too light for walleye or pike
- − About $20 more than the Lew's panfish combo
Pflueger Trion Ice Fishing Spinning Combo
Best upgrade spinning combo

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $70, ships to home · Sizes: 27" ML, 28" M, 36" MH · Reel: 4+1 bearings (size 20) or 6+1 (size 25)
If you want a better reel without building your own combo, the Pflueger Trion Ice is the step up. On paper it has the best reel in this guide's spinning combos: a graphite body and rotor, an aluminum braid-ready spool, a stainless/oil felt drag, slow oscillation and Pflueger's Total Line Control System, which Pflueger says reduces line twist and wind knots with every type of line.
The 27" medium-light and 28" medium versions use a size 20 reel with 4+1 bearings and a 6 lb max drag; the 36" medium-heavy steps up to a size 25 reel with 6+1 bearings and an 8 lb max drag. All three rods are fast-action 24-ton graphite with a full cork grip.
The caveats: it's new at Sportsman's (no reviews on October 30), and at $69.99 it costs more than twice the GX2. If you fish a lot and like light line, those upgrades are worth it. Note that the older Pflueger Trion/Fenwick HMG ice combo was not available to ship on October 30.
| Sizes | 27" ML, 28" M, 36" MH |
| Rod | 24-ton graphite, fast action, cork |
| Reel | Size 20 (4+1, 6 lb drag) or 25 (6+1, 8 lb drag), 5.2:1 |
| Reviews | None yet |
Pros
- + Best-equipped spinning reel here: 4+1 or 6+1 bearings
- + Braid-ready aluminum spool and anti-twist line system
- + Sensitive 24-ton graphite, fast action
Cons
- − No reviews yet at Sportsman's
- − More than twice the price of the GX2
- − Graphite is less forgiving of abuse than fiberglass
13 Fishing The Snitch Pro In-Line Ice Fishing Combo
Best inline combo

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $100, ships to home · Size: 29" quick tip · Reel: inline, right- or left-hand
Inline reels look like small fly reels and sit under the rod. Their big advantage is that the line comes straight off the spool instead of looping around a spinning bail, so there's far less line twist, and your bait doesn't spin below the hole.
The Snitch Pro is 13 Fishing's premium inline combo, and it's the most expensive pick here at $99.99. The reel's FreeFall trigger lets you press a lever and drop the bait straight to the depth you want, with drop speed control and 3 bearings plus instant anti-reverse. The rod is a 29" solid carbon blank with a hi-vis Flex-Core "quick tip" (a soft tip section for bite detection on a stiffer rod). Right- and left-hand versions were both available to ship.
Be aware of two things. This generation is new at Sportsman's with no reviews yet, and an older Snitch Pro/FreeFall Ghost inline combo on Amazon averaged only 3.6 stars from 19 ratings, so read recent reviews before you buy. Inline reels also take some practice.
| Size | 29 in quick tip, right or left hand |
| Rod | Solid carbon, Flex-Core tip |
| Reel | Inline, FreeFall trigger, 3+1 bearings |
| Reviews | New, none yet |
Pros
- + Inline reel: almost no line twist, bait doesn't spin
- + FreeFall trigger drops your bait fast to the right depth
- + Solid carbon blank with a soft hi-vis tip
Cons
- − Most expensive combo here
- − Mixed owner ratings on an older version
- − Inline reels take practice
HT Enterprises Ice Logic SLX Series Ice Fishing Combo
Best carbon rod under $55

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $53, ships to home · Size: 28" medium-light · Reel: 4-bearing spinning
HT Enterprises is a long-time ice fishing brand, and the Ice Logic SLX is its sensitivity pick. HT describes a super custom tapered carbon blank for sensitivity and thin-profile aluminum oxide guides that it says help keep ice from building up. The reel (ILC-104A) has four bearings, infinite anti-reverse and a machined aluminum spool and arm, and it can be set up for right- or left-hand retrieve.
The 28" medium-light length sits right at the line between panfish and walleye: light enough for perch and crappie, with enough backbone for eater walleye. Sportsman's carried only that one size to ship on October 30, and it had a single 5-star rating, so there's little owner feedback to go on.
| Size | 28 in ML |
| Rod | Tapered carbon, aluminum oxide guides |
| Reel | 4 bearings, aluminum spool |
| Rating | 5.0 stars, 1 rating |
Pros
- + Carbon blank and 4-bearing reel under $55
- + Thin guides designed to limit ice build-up
- + 28 in medium-light covers perch to eater walleye
Cons
- − Only one size available to ship
- − Almost no owner reviews
- − Carbon is more fragile than fiberglass
Ugly Stik Carbon Ice Fishing Spinning Rod and Reel Combo
Best Ugly Stik step-up

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $45 for the 28", about $73 for the 32" and 36", ships to home · Reel: 3+1 bearing spinning
The Ugly Stik Carbon Ice trades the GX2's fiberglass-composite toughness for a 100% 24-ton graphite blank that Ugly Stik calls lightweight and well balanced. It keeps coated one-piece "Ugly Tuff" guides, and the reel steps up to 3+1 bearings, a machined aluminum spool and 6 lb max drag.
The 28" medium-light (rated for 2-6 lb line) was the bargain on October 30 at $44.99; the 32" (listed as medium in the spec table, 4-8 lb line) and the 36" medium-heavy with a bigger size 10 reel were $72.99. That spread lets one model cover crappie through pike. Owner feedback is thin and mixed: one 5-star rating at Sportsman's, and 3.6 to 4.5 stars on 2 to 17 ratings per Amazon listing.
| Sizes | 28 in ML $44.99; 32 in M and 36 in MH $72.99 |
| Rod | 24-ton graphite, Ugly Tuff guides |
| Reel | 3+1 bearings, 6 lb drag, 5.2:1 |
| Rating | 5.0 stars, 1 rating |
Pros
- + 24-ton graphite blank with Ugly Tuff guides
- + 3+1 bearing reel with 6 lb drag
- + 28 in ML version is a bargain at about $45
Cons
- − 32 and 36 in cost about $28 more
- − Mixed, thin ratings on Amazon
- − Product title and spec table disagree on the 32 in power
Lew's Mach Smash Ice Spinning Combo
Best budget panfish combo

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $40 (sale, was $49.99), ships to home · Sizes: 24" UL, 26" L, 26" ML, 28" M · Line: pre-spooled 4 lb mono
If you want to drill a hole this weekend and start fishing without buying line or spooling a reel, the Lew's Mach Smash Ice is ready out of the box: Lew's pre-spools it with 4 lb monofilament. It was on sale for $39.77 on October 30, in four sizes from a 24" ultralight to a 28" medium.
The rod is IM6 graphite with stainless guides and an EVA grip; the reel has 2 bearings, a Zero Reverse clutch and a collapsible handle. Lew's also adds its Speed Lube, which it says gives "exceptional smoothness and performance in all weather conditions." Cold grease is where cheap ice reels get stiff, so it's a sensible focus.
The 24" and 26" light sizes are panfish rods; the 26" medium-light and 28" medium handle perch and eater walleye. Sportsman's showed 2 ratings, both 5 stars.
| Sizes | 24" UL, 26" L, 26" ML, 28" M |
| Rod | IM6 graphite, stainless guides, EVA |
| Reel | 2 bearings, Speed Lube, pre-spooled 4 lb mono |
| Rating | 5.0 stars, 2 ratings |
Pros
- + Pre-spooled and ready to fish
- + Four sizes, all about $40 on sale
- + IM6 graphite rod and cold-weather Speed Lube (Lew's)
Cons
- − 2-bearing reel
- − Few owner reviews
- − 4 lb mono is light for walleye; respool for bigger fish
Which should you buy?

- Walleye are your main target: 13 Fishing Capture Walleye in 28" medium, plus the 36" medium-heavy for deadsticking or bigger fish.
- You chase bluegill and crappie in a shelter: 13 Fishing Capture Panfish for the spring bobber, or the Lew's Mach Smash Ice to save money.
- You want a better reel and braid: Pflueger Trion Ice.
- Line twist drives you crazy: 13 Fishing Snitch Pro inline.
- You want carbon sensitivity on a budget: HT Ice Logic SLX or the 28" Ugly Stik Carbon Ice.
- You're outfitting kids or a new angler: Lew's Mach Smash Ice, since it comes pre-spooled.
What to look for in an ice fishing rod and reel combo
Length by species
Ice rods are short because you're fishing straight down a hole, often inside a shelter. As a rule of thumb, 24 to 28 inches suits panfish (bluegill, crappie, perch), 28 to 32 inches suits walleye, and 36 inches and up suits pike and lake trout, where a longer rod helps you set the hook and keep big fish away from the sharp edge of the hole.
Power and action
Power is how much the rod resists bending. Ultralight and light rods let tiny jigs and 2 to 4 lb line work and show soft panfish bites. Medium-light and medium rods are the walleye sweet spot for jigging spoons and rattle baits. Medium-heavy is for big walleye, pike and lake trout. Spring bobbers (like the one on the Capture Panfish) and soft "quick tips" (like the Snitch Pro) are tools for seeing bites a stiff rod would hide.
Spinning vs. inline reel
A spinning reel is familiar, has a real drag, and is the easier choice for most people. An inline reel lets line come straight off the spool, which means much less line twist and a bait that doesn't spin, and many have a free-fall lever to drop your bait fast. Inline reels are usually pricier and take practice. Want to build your own inline setup on a rod you already own? Piscifun sells the ICX Carbon inline ice reel for about $70 (checked October 30).
Rod material
Solid fiberglass (the 13 Fishing Capture combos) is tough and forgiving. Graphite and carbon (Pflueger Trion, HT Ice Logic, Ugly Stik Carbon, Lew's IM6) transmit more of the bite to your hand but are more brittle if stepped on or frozen into a rod holder.
Bearings, drag and cold
More ball bearings generally means a smoother reel, and smoothness matters most with light line. Cold stiffens grease, so look for reels whose makers address cold weather (Lew's Speed Lube) and keep reels out of slush when you can.
Line and pre-spooling
Match the line to the rod's rating: the GX2 28" is rated 4-8 lb and the Ugly Stik Carbon 28" is rated 2-6 lb, for example. Only the Lew's came pre-spooled in this group (4 lb mono), so plan to buy ice line for the rest. Our best-selling fishing lines guide explains mono, fluorocarbon and braid.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best ice fishing rod and reel combo?
For most anglers, the Ugly Stik GX2 Ice combo: it had the most owner ratings of any ice combo at Sportsman's Warehouse (4.6 stars from 44) and cost about $33 on October 30, 2026 in a 28" medium or 30" medium-heavy. If you mainly fish walleye and want more size choices, the 13 Fishing Capture Walleye comes in five sizes for about $60.
What size ice rod is best for walleye?
Most walleye anglers use a 28 to 32 inch medium-light or medium rod for jigging, and many add a 36 inch rod for a deadstick or bigger fish. The 13 Fishing Capture Walleye (26 to 36 inches), Ugly Stik GX2 Ice (28 and 30 inches) and Pflueger Trion Ice (27, 28 and 36 inches) all cover that range.
What ice rod should I use for panfish?
A short ultralight or light rod, roughly 24 to 28 inches, with 2 to 4 lb line. Light power lets small jigs work and shows soft bites. The 13 Fishing Capture Panfish adds a built-in spring bobber for very light bites, and the Lew's Mach Smash Ice comes in 24 and 26 inch light sizes, pre-spooled.
Is an inline reel better than a spinning reel for ice fishing?
Neither is better for everyone. Inline reels cause far less line twist and keep your bait from spinning, which many panfish and walleye anglers like. Spinning reels have a smoother drag feel, cost less and are easier for beginners. If you're new to ice fishing, a spinning combo is the simpler start.
Can I use a regular fishing rod for ice fishing?
You can, but it's awkward. Open-water rods are 6 to 7 feet long, which keeps you far from the hole and hides light bites. Ice rods are 24 to 36 inches so you can fish right over the hole or inside a shelter.
Do ice fishing combos come with line?
Some do. In this guide only the Lew's Mach Smash Ice was listed as pre-spooled (4 lb mono). For the others, plan to buy line matched to the rod's rating, such as 2 to 4 lb for panfish and 6 to 8 lb for walleye.
The bottom line
Start with the Ugly Stik GX2 Ice if you want a proven, inexpensive combo for perch and walleye. Go with the 13 Fishing Capture Walleye if walleye are your focus and you want to pick the exact length and power, or the Capture Panfish if bluegill and crappie are. Spend up for the Pflueger Trion Ice if you want the better reel, or the Snitch Pro inline if line twist has ruined enough mornings. Whatever you pick, match the rod to the fish, spool it with the right line, and check the ice before you walk out.
