Best Ice Fishing Sleds for Hauling Gear and Game

The walk out is the part nobody talks about. An auger, a flasher, two buckets, a heater, rods and a shelter add up fast, and making three trips across the ice in the dark is how a good morning starts badly. A good sled turns all of that into one pull, and in deer season the same tub can carry a buck out of the woods. That's why US searches for "ice fishing sled" jumped from nearly zero to steady interest this past month as the season started, per Google Trends, led by "sled for ice fishing," "jet sled" and "Otter sled," with "large ice fishing sled" breaking out.
This guide ranks six sleds you can buy right now at Sportsman's Warehouse, from a $40 Jet Sled Jr. to the 75-inch Otter Pro Magnum, on size, weight, towing setup, shipping and price, plus the hitches, runners, covers and harnesses that make them work. This is research-based, not a hands-on test.
The short answer
For most anglers who ride out on a machine, the Otter Pro. For the best value, and for hauling a deer, the Shappell Jet Sled XL. Our picks:
- Best overall (towing): Otter Pro Utility Sled, Medium, 65 in, about $150. See it at Sportsman's Warehouse →
- Best value / deer: Shappell Jet Sled XL, 66 in, about $90 on sale. See it at Sportsman's Warehouse →
- Ships to your door: Sportsman's Warehouse 66in Utility Ice Sled Kit with cover, hitch and runners, about $130. See it at Sportsman's Warehouse →
- Best large sled: Otter Pro Magnum, 75 in, about $195. See it at Sportsman's Warehouse →
Prices checked November 4, 2026 at Sportsman's Warehouse. Most sleds were ship-to-store only that day; the 66-inch kit shipped to home.
How we chose
Nobody at OSS America pulled these sleds for this guide. We started with search demand: Google Trends shows US interest in "ice fishing sled" rising from 0 to 33 over the past 30 days, with "sled for ice fishing," "jet sled," "otter sled," "otter ice fishing sled," "large ice fishing sled" and "eskimo ice fishing" as the top related searches, and Breakout growth for "large ice fishing sled."
Then we went through every sled and sled accessory Sportsman's Warehouse listed on November 4: Otter Pro and Otter Sport sleds, Shappell Jet Sleds in three sizes, two Sportsman's house-brand kits (the 59-inch kit was out of stock) and a steel ski carrier. We read each size's spec table for length, width, depth and weight, the owner rating counts, and the shipping options for a sample ZIP code. We also read Otter's and Eagle Claw's (Shappell's) own sled pages for build details. Every pick here comes from Sportsman's Warehouse, where we could read each size's specs, ratings and shipping options in one place.
We weighed floor size (length x width), side height, empty weight, towing setup (molded hitch pockets, add-on hitch or hand-pull rope), runner options, owner ratings, how it ships and price. All prices and specs were read on November 4, 2026.
All six at a glance
| # | Sled | Size class | L x W x H (in) | Weight | Footprint | Towing | Shipping | Price (Nov 4) |

| #6 | Shappell Jet Sled Jr. | Compact | 43 x 21 x 8 | 6 lb | 6.3 sq ft | Hand pull | Store pickup | $39.99 |
Prices, sizes and weights from the Sportsman's Warehouse page each row links to, checked November 4, 2026. Footprint is the listed outside length x width; usable floor is smaller. "Store pickup" means Sportsman's offered free ship-to-store but no home delivery that day (shown for a Florida ZIP; it can vary by location).
How to read the chart: the Shappell Jet Sleds give you the most floor per dollar, about $6.33 per square foot for the XL and $6.38 for the Jr. The Otter Pro sleds cost the most per square foot, around $10, and what you pay for is deeper 15-inch sides, molded-in hitch and runner pockets and a heavier build. The 66-inch kit lands in between, but its price also covers a cover, hitch and runners. Footprint uses outside dimensions, so the space inside is a little smaller on every sled.
Ice safety comes first
No sled makes ice safe. The Minnesota DNR's guidelines, for new, clear ice only, are: under 4 inches, stay off; 4 inches for ice fishing on foot; 5 to 7 inches for a snowmobile or small ATV; 7 to 8 inches for a side-by-side. The DNR says white ice is only about half as strong, so double those numbers, and notes ice can be two feet thick in one spot and one inch thick a few yards away.
Check the ice yourself as you go, follow your own state wildlife agency's guidance, and never assume ice is safe because someone else is out there.
The 6 best ice fishing sleds, ranked
Otter Pro Utility Sled (Medium)
Best overall for towing behind an ATV or snowmobile

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $150 (Medium), free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4) · Size: 65 x 32 x 15 in, 32 lb · Owner reviews: 4.9 from 29
"Otter sled" and "Otter ice fishing sled" both sit near the top of what people search alongside ice fishing sleds, and the Pro is the reason. It's the sled Otter builds for pulling behind a machine. Otter's own sled page lists molded-in hitch pockets, molded-in Hyfax runner pockets and a thick bottom with molded-in ribs on every Pro size, and calls the Pro line ideal for ATV, UTV or snowmobile towing.
Otter roto-molds its sleds in one seamless piece and says the process puts more material where the sled takes the most shock and stress. The front is raised to push through snow, the back is raised to keep cargo from sliding out, and the outer lip is reinforced to hold ropes and tie-downs. Sportsman's lists a standard 5/16-inch bottom. The Medium measures 65 x 32 x 15 inches and weighs 32 pounds, which is room for buckets, an auger, rods and a heater with space left over.
The trade-off is that 32 pounds is heavy to drag empty by hand, and you'll want the hitch. The Otter tow hitch with pin fits the Small, Medium and Magnum Pro sleds ($54.77 on November 4), and the Otter Hyfax runner kit bolts into the runner pockets ($39.77 for the Medium). The Pro listing at Sportsman's had 4.9 stars from 29 reviews across its sizes. On November 4, the Medium was $149.99 with free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4).
| Size (L x W x H) | 65 x 32 x 15 in (Medium) |
| Weight | 32 lb |
| Material | Roto-molded polyethylene, seamless |
| Bottom | Standard 5/16 in, molded-in ribs (listing) |
| Hitch | Molded-in hitch pockets (hitch sold separately) |
| Runners | Molded-in Hyfax pockets (runners sold separately) |
| Other sizes | Magnum 75 in $194.99; Large 85 in out of stock |
| Shipping (Nov 4) | Ship to store only, free |
Pros
- + Built for towing: hitch and runner pockets molded in
- + Deep 15-inch sides and a raised back
- + 4.9 stars from 29 owner reviews
- + Upgrade path: Otter hitch, runners and travel cover
Cons
- − Heaviest mid-size sled here at 32 lb
- − Hitch and runners cost extra
- − No home delivery from Sportsman's on November 4
Shappell Jet Sled XL
Best value, and the pick for hauling a deer

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $90 on sale (was $109.99), free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4) · Size: 66 x 31 x 12 in, 21.5 lb · Owner reviews: 5.0 from 72
"Jet sled" was the second-biggest search tied to this topic and still climbing, and the Shappell Jet Sled is what most people mean by it. It also had the strongest owner signal of any sled at Sportsman's on November 4: 5.0 stars from 72 reviews, with 96% five-star.
Shappell (now sold under Eagle Claw) describes it as a rugged polyethylene sled with molded runners, and lists ice fishing, transporting deer, firewood, traps, decoys and feed as uses. Sportsman's review summary says owners value it for hauling gear, game and supplies across snow, ice, trails and dirt, and like the thick, sturdy plastic and how easily it tows behind a snowmobile or by hand. The same summary notes a few owners found hand-pulling through deep snow, or the short rope, awkward.
The XL is 66 x 31 x 12 inches and 21.5 pounds, almost the same floor as the Otter Pro Medium for about $60 less on sale. It has shallower sides and no molded hitch pockets, so towing means the Shappell universal hitch ($34.99; arms adjust from 3 to 22 inches, rated to tow up to 100 pounds per the listing). The Jet Sled XL travel cover is $29.99 and fits over 6-gallon buckets. On November 4 the XL was $89.99, marked as an early Black Friday deal, with free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4).
| Size (L x W x H) | 66 x 31 x 12 in (XL, model JSX) |
| Weight | 21.5 lb |
| Material | Polyethylene with molded runners |
| Maker's listed uses | Ice fishing, transporting deer, firewood, traps, decoys, feed |
| Hitch | Shappell universal hitch, $34.99, tows up to 100 lb (listing) |
| Cover | XL travel cover, 600D polyester, $29.99 |
| Other sizes | Medium 54 in $59.99; Jr. 43 in $39.99 |
| Shipping (Nov 4) | Ship to store only, free |
Pros
- + 5.0 stars from 72 reviews, the most-reviewed sled at Sportsman's
- + Mid-size floor for about $90 on sale
- + Shappell lists hauling deer among its uses
- + Cheap hitch and cover add-ons
Cons
- − Shallower 12-inch sides than the Otter Pro
- − No molded hitch pockets
- − Owners say the rope is short for hand-pulling
Sportsman's Warehouse Utility Ice Sled Kit (66 in)
Best ready-to-tow kit (ships to your door)

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $130, ships to home (delivery by November 13 on November 4) · Size: 66 x 30 x 12 in · Reviews: none yet
Most sleds at Sportsman's could only be shipped to a store on November 4. This one was the exception: Sportsman's own 66-inch Utility Ice Sled Kit showed free home delivery by November 13. If there's no Sportsman's Warehouse near you, that alone puts it on this list.
The spec table lists 66 x 30 x 12 inches in black. The page has no written description, so we went by the listing photos, which show the sled with a green Sportsman's travel cover, a two-arm tow hitch, three runners and a bag of mounting hardware. The older 59-inch version of this kit (out of stock on November 4) listed the same kind of bundle in writing: sled, a 43-inch hitch, three nylon runners and a polyester cover.
Bought separately, a mid-size sled, hitch, runners and cover would cost well over the kit's $129.99, which is why this is a fair deal on paper. The honest catch: it's a new house-brand item with no reviews yet and no listed weight, so nobody can yet tell you how the plastic holds up over a few seasons. Look it over when it arrives and keep the box until you've loaded it.
| Size (L x W x H) | 66 x 30 x 12 in |
| Weight | Not listed |
| In the box (per photos) | Sled, travel cover, two-arm hitch, 3 runners, hardware |
| Model | MPN 18585 |
| Reviews | None yet (new item) |
| Shipping (Nov 4) | Ships to home free, delivery by Nov 13 |
Pros
- + Ships to your home, unlike the other sleds here on Nov 4
- + Cover, hitch and runners included
- + Mid-size 66-inch floor
Cons
- − No reviews yet
- − No written description or weight on the listing
- − House brand with no track record
Otter Sport Utility Sled (Large)
Best for pulling by hand

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $115 (Large), free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4) · Size: 64 x 29 x 11 in, 17 lb · Owner reviews: 4.8 from 14
If you walk out instead of riding, weight matters more than toughness ratings. Otter says the Sport line is designed for hand pulling and ships with a tow rope. The Large is 64 x 29 x 11 inches and 17 pounds, which is 15 pounds lighter than the Otter Pro Medium for nearly the same length.
It's built the same way as the Pro: one-piece roto-molded polyethylene, a raised back so gear doesn't slide off, and a reinforced lip for tie-downs. What it gives up is the Pro's molded-in hitch and runner pockets. If you later want to tow it, Otter sells a tow hitch and a universal hitch adapter that Sportsman's says fits the Sport sleds.
Owners gave the Sport listing 4.8 stars from 14 reviews. On November 4, the Large was $114.99, the Medium (53 x 25 x 10 in, 12.5 lb) was $75.99, and the Small was $59.99, all with free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4).
| Size (L x W x H) | 64 x 29 x 11 in (Large) |
| Weight | 17 lb |
| Material | 100% roto-molded polyethylene, 1-piece |
| Pulling | Tow rope included; made for hand pulling (Otter) |
| Hitch | Optional, via Otter's universal tow hitch adapter |
| Other sizes | Medium 53 in $75.99; Small 43 in $59.99 |
| Shipping (Nov 4) | Ship to store only, free |
Pros
- + 17 lb, light for its length
- + Tow rope included
- + Same one-piece Otter build as the Pro
- + 4.8 stars from 14 reviews
Cons
- − No molded-in hitch or runner pockets
- − Shallower 11-inch sides
- − No home delivery on November 4
Otter Pro Utility Sled (Magnum)
Best large ice fishing sled

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $195 (Magnum), free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4) · Size: 75 x 38 x 15 in, 42 lb · Owner reviews: 4.9 from 29 (Pro listing)
"Large ice fishing sled" was a Breakout search this past month. If you haul for a group, run a portable heater, carry a bigger auger or pull a cooler of fish home, the Otter Pro Magnum is the biggest sled we could link to that was in stock on November 4. The 85-inch Large Pro was out of stock.
It's the same Pro build as our #1 pick, scaled up: 75 x 38 x 15 inches with molded-in hitch and Hyfax pockets and Otter's thick ribbed bottom. That works out to about 19.8 square feet of outside footprint, roughly 37% more than the Medium. It also weighs 42 pounds empty, so plan on towing it, not dragging it.
The Otter hitch with pin that fits the Medium also fits the Magnum, and Otter makes a Magnum travel cover ($74.99, 5.0 from 8 reviews). On November 4 the Magnum was $194.99 with free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4).
| Size (L x W x H) | 75 x 38 x 15 in (Magnum) |
| Weight | 42 lb |
| Footprint | About 19.8 sq ft (outside) |
| Hitch / runners | Molded-in pockets for both |
| Hitch | Otter tow hitch w/pin (S/M/Magnum) $54.77 |
| Cover | Otter Magnum travel cover $74.99 |
| Shipping (Nov 4) | Ship to store only, free |
Pros
- + Most floor space of any in-stock sled here
- + Same proven Pro build and 4.9-star listing
- + Lowest price per square foot among the Otter Pro sizes
Cons
- − 42 lb empty: not a hand-pull sled
- − Needs a big truck bed or trailer
- − Most expensive pick here
Shappell Jet Sled Jr.
Best budget and compact pick

Sportsman's Warehouse: about $40, free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4) · Size: 43 x 21 x 8 in, 6 lb · Owner reviews: 5.0 from 72 (Jet Sled listing)
Not everybody needs a 66-inch tub. If you walk out to the first break with a bucket, a hand auger and two rods, the Jet Sled Jr. is the cheapest way to stop carrying everything. It's 43 x 21 x 8 inches and just 6 pounds.
Eagle Claw says the Jr. compacts the original Jet Sled for smaller loads and a smaller footprint, and fits into smaller spaces, so it's an option for people who drive cars instead of trucks. That small size is also its limit: a 5-gallon bucket, auger and tackle fill it fast, and it's too short for a deer.
It shares the Jet Sled listing's 5.0 stars from 72 reviews. On November 4 it was $39.99 in black with free ship-to-store pickup (no home delivery offered on November 4). If you want a bit more room for not much more, the Medium Jet Sled (54 x 25 x 10 in, 11.5 lb) was $59.99 on the same page.
| Size (L x W x H) | 43 x 21 x 8 in (Jr.) |
| Weight | 6 lb |
| Material | Polyethylene with molded runners |
| Best for | Walk-out trips with a small load; small cars |
| Step up | Medium Jet Sled 54 in, $59.99 |
| Shipping (Nov 4) | Ship to store only, free |
Pros
- + About $40
- + 6 lb, fits in a car trunk
- + Same Jet Sled listing with 72 five-star-heavy reviews
Cons
- − Small: fills up fast
- − Too short for hauling a deer
- − No home delivery on November 4
Hitches, runners, covers and harnesses
A bare sled works for short walks. For anything longer, the right add-on matters as much as the sled. Hitches let you tow behind an ATV or snowmobile, runners help it pull easier and protect the bottom (per Eskimo and Otter), covers keep snow and slush off your gear, and a harness frees your hands when you pull on foot. Here's what Sportsman's carried on November 4:
| Add-on | What it does | Price (Nov 4) |
|---|---|---|
| Shappell Jet Sled Universal Hitch | Tow hitch for Jet Sleds. Arms adjust 3 to 22 in, pinless to the sled, rated to tow up to 100 lb (listing); 4.1 stars from 23 | $34.99 |
| Otter Outdoors Utility Tow Hitch w/Pin (Small/Medium/Magnum) | Tow hitch for Otter Pro (S/M/Magnum). Steel tube, spring-loaded coupler that pivots 360°, pins into the molded hitch pockets; 4.7 from 8. Large-sled version $94.99 | $54.77 |
| Eskimo Universal Sled Tow Hitch | Universal tow hitch. Mounts to the sled sides, fits 19 to 36-inch widths, pivots over rough ice (on sale from $69.99) | $39.77 |
| Eskimo EZ-Stow Pivoting Tow Hitch | Pivoting tow hitch. Tongue flips over the sled for storage; ball-hitch adapter included; 5.0 from 4 | $119.99 |
| Otter Outdoors Hyfax Runner Kit (Medium) | Runners for Otter Pro (Medium). 5/8-inch high-density runners bolt into Otter's molded pockets; 5.0 from 14. Other sizes $54.77 and $74 | $39.77 |
| Eskimo Sled Runner/Tracking Kit (60 in) | Runner kit, 60-inch sleds. Three UHMW polyethylene runners; Eskimo says runners pull easier and extend sled life | $79.77 |
| Eagle Claw Shappell Jet Sled Travel Cover (XL) | Travel cover, Jet Sled XL. 600D polyester with an elastic edge, fits over 6-gallon pails; 4.9 from 21 | $29.99 |
| Otter Outdoors Utility Sled Travel Cover (Magnum) | Travel cover, Otter Pro Magnum. Heavyweight waterproof fabric, shock-cord hem, 1-year warranty; 5.0 from 8 | $74.99 |
| Eagle Claw Shappell Sled/Shelter Pulling Harness | Pulling harness. Two-point nylon body harness for a sled or shelter; 4.5 from 6 | $32.99 |
| Clam Universal Utility Sled Pulling Harness | Padded pulling harness. Two-point, padded straps, chest pockets, fits waists up to 60 in over outerwear (on sale from $44.99) | $32.77 |
All at Sportsman's Warehouse, checked November 4, 2026. Ratings are Sportsman's owner reviews.
One more option for deep snow: the Sportsman's Warehouse Smity Sled ($99.99) is a steel ski frame with a 400-pound load rating that Sportsman's says adjusts to fit most sleds or gear boxes, so your tub rides up on skis instead of plowing through powder. It showed home delivery by November 11. It's new, with no reviews yet.

Which should you buy?
- You ride out on an ATV or snowmobile and want a sled that lasts: Otter Pro Utility Sled (Medium) plus the Otter hitch.
- You want the most sled for the money, or you'll also drag deer: Shappell Jet Sled XL. See our deer cart guide for dry-ground hauling.
- There's no Sportsman's store near you: Sportsman's Warehouse 66in Utility Ice Sled Kit, the one that shipped to home.
- You walk out and pull by hand: Otter Sport Utility Sled (Large) with a pulling harness.
- You haul for a crew or carry a hub shelter and heater: Otter Pro Magnum. Pair it with one of our ice fishing shelter picks.
- You fish close to shore with a light load, or drive a car: Shappell Jet Sled Jr.
What to look for in an ice fishing sled
- Size it to your biggest load. Lay out what you actually carry: buckets, auger, flasher, heater, rods, chair. Measure your buckets and auger against the listed lengths: 43 inches (Jet Sled Jr.), 64 to 66 inches (mid-size) or 75 inches (Otter Pro Magnum). If an electric or gas auger rides along, see our ice auger guide for lengths.
- Side height. Deeper sides (15 inches on the Otter Pro) hold more and keep loads from tipping out over pressure ridges. Shallower sides (8 to 12 inches on Jet Sleds) make loading and unloading easier.
- Empty weight. If you pull by hand, every pound counts on the way back. The Otter Sport Large is 17 lb; the Otter Pro Medium is 32 lb.
- Towing setup. Otter Pro sleds have molded-in hitch pockets. Jet Sleds and Otter Sport sleds need an add-on hitch that mounts to the sides.
- Runners. Eskimo says bolt-on runners help a sled pull easier and extend its life over rough ice. Otter sells Hyfax runners that fit its molded pockets; Eskimo and Shappell sell universal kits and wear bars.
- A cover. A travel cover keeps snow, slush and road spray off your gear on the trailer or behind a machine. Match it to your sled's exact size.
- Where you'll buy it. Sleds are bulky to ship. On November 4 most sleds at Sportsman's were ship-to-store only, and Eagle Claw warns of higher shipping rates on its oversized sleds, so check the shipping options for your ZIP before you order.
Frequently asked questions
What size ice fishing sled do I need?
For one angler walking out with a bucket, a hand auger and a couple of rods, a compact sled around 43 inches long, like the Shappell Jet Sled Jr. (43 x 21 x 8 in), is enough. For a full setup with a power auger, flasher, heater and shelter gear, most people go mid-size, 64 to 66 inches long, like the Otter Pro Medium, Shappell Jet Sled XL or Otter Sport Large. For a group or a big hub shelter, look at the Otter Pro Magnum at 75 inches.
What's the difference between a Jet Sled and an Otter sled?
Both are polyethylene utility sleds. Shappell's Jet Sleds have molded runners, lighter weights and lower prices (the XL was about $90 on sale on November 4). Otter Pro sleds are roto-molded in one piece with deeper 15-inch sides and molded-in hitch and runner pockets, and Otter designs them for towing behind an ATV, UTV or snowmobile. Otter Sport sleds use the same construction but are made for hand pulling, with a tow rope included.
Can I pull an ice fishing sled behind an ATV or snowmobile?
Yes, with a hitch. Otter Pro sleds take Otter's tow hitch in molded-in pockets. Jet Sleds use the Shappell universal hitch, which Sportsman's lists as rated to tow up to 100 pounds, and Eskimo makes universal and pivoting hitches that mount to the sled sides. Before you ride, check the ice: the Minnesota DNR's guideline is 5 to 7 inches of new, clear ice for a snowmobile or small ATV.
Can you haul a deer in an ice fishing sled?
Yes. Shappell lists transporting deer among the Jet Sled's uses, and Sportsman's review summary says owners value it for hauling game. A 64 to 66-inch sled like the Jet Sled XL is the practical size for a whitetail; the 43-inch Jr. is too short. Follow your state's tagging and transport rules.
Do I need runners on my sled?
Not always, but they help. Eskimo says runners help a sled pull easier and extend its life over rough, jagged ice, and Otter sells Hyfax runner kits that bolt into the molded pockets on its Pro sleds. If you tow often behind a machine or cross a lot of rough ice, runners are worth adding.
Can an ice fishing sled carry a flip-over or hub shelter?
Check your shelter's packed size against the sled's listed length and width before you buy; a bigger sled leaves room for the shelter plus the rest of your gear. Add-ons like the Eskimo EZ-Stow hitch and the Clam and Eagle Claw pulling harnesses are listed for pulling either a shelter or a hauler sled, per their listings.
Why can't I get some sleds shipped to my house?
Sleds are bulky. On November 4, Sportsman's Warehouse offered most of the sleds in this guide as free ship-to-store pickup only, with no home delivery (shown for a Florida ZIP; it can vary by location). The Sportsman's Warehouse 66in Utility Ice Sled Kit was the exception and showed home delivery by November 13.
The bottom line
If you ride out on a machine, the Otter Pro Utility Sled is the one to own: deep sides, molded-in hitch and runner pockets and a 4.9-star owner rating, for about $150 in the Medium. If you want the most sled for the money, or you'll use it for deer too, the Shappell Jet Sled XL at about $90 on sale has the best owner rating at Sportsman's and the lowest cost per square foot. If you can't get to a store, the Sportsman's Warehouse 66in kit ships to your door with a cover, hitch and runners. Whichever you pick, add a hitch or a harness, and check the ice every trip.
